BLOG 311

February 28, 2009

Ah !! The joy of working out at the gym again. The adrenalin pumping again and the unused muscles being woken up from their long slumber. Suddenly everything starts looking brighter. The body moves in a different rhythm the breathing improves, there is a lightness in the body and lethargy takes a back seat.

Charged with the fresh blood running in the veins, there is a desire to do more in the time one took to do less. This is so welcome when travel and being out of the house for long stretches of time has piled up chores and paper work that has now begun to collect beyond the nose.

The familiarity of the home and its surroundings can never be replaced with the largest of suites in a Hotel with all its comforts. I am happy about that. What I am unhappy about is that when the eyes open in the morning its takes a few minutes to decipher where I am. Disorientation at its most.

Jaya comes in from Delhi, after finishing Parliament – the last session before the elections and the formation of a new Government. Aishwarya flies in from Kolkata for the night. It is good to see her. She has been away from the house for so long.

Everyone dresses up and we trundle off to the Filmfare Awards.

It is a delightful evening. Something in the air this time smells and feels different. Ranbir and Imran are the hosts and are hilarious ! Such a joy to see them without any shackles, free in spirit, respectful of the occasion and easily the life of the show…

Abhishek performes, Aishwarya and he are in the nominations, but do not win and I go up to present the Lifetime Achievement to Om Puri – a friend, a wonderful colleague and one of our finest actors. My attraction however is his son Ishaan, a delightful little fellow who is absolutely devoid of any self-consciousness and has been most endearing to me. In fact has always treated me as his age group buddy.

Back stage Shahrukh and me discuss his injury and the post operative care. He has had his stitches removed today and has decided to come out. He honors the SlumDog kids on stage. Kareena, Saif and others join us waiting to be introduced on stage and we sit and admire the twosome RK and IK as they move from one award introduction to another keeping the show racing along !!

Arjun Rampal gets best supporting and is moved to tears in his speech. He has really roughed it out in the industry and labored hard. Later in the night he sends me a sms saying how grateful he was to have been the inspiration in his life and how sorry he was that he could not name me in his speech because he was overwhelmed by the moment.. I am deeply touched. I advise him never EVER to forget the moment that brought on that emotion ; that shall and should be his motivation for the rest of his career, I sms back.

Till late in the night we sit and catch up with each other over dinner. Aishwarya leaves early morning again. Abhishek will join her in a day. We have a film to launch on the 2nd – PAA and his presence is required.

Shanouk has snapped at one of the maids and injured her cheek. He was resting after an exhausting run around in the lawn and I think she decided to pet him then. The maid is the oldest serving member in our staff – over 35 years. Indeed as I look around none of our staff have served us for less than 25 years . I do not know if this speaks well for us or for their tolerance ! Ha.. A few have left earlier too and have been making efforts to come back. But once the trust is broken it becomes odd and difficult to take them back.

Sincerity and trust have this peculiar way of behaving. Take a long while to build and a swift moment to break.

I rest with PAA in my thoughts and how I shall approach the role and the film. Good. Keeps you thinking and active..

My love for you..

Day 310

Prateeksha, Mumbai                               February 27, 2009                         11:57 pm

Biding farewell to Hyderabad and to the novel Novotel Hotel within the precincts of the spanking new Hyderabad airport was achieved with a minimum of fuss and protocol. Visitors book, pleasantries with the staff, keepsake photographs, the odd autograph and the cheerful Kadar Bhai my chauffeur, who wishes the scene of NamakHalal of me calling Om Prakash ji my Daddoo be soon enacted in real terms by Abhishek’s progeny addressing me thus, driving me off to the aircraft.

Sania Mirza is on flight. I wish her for her recent triumph in Australia. She is travelling for a shoot for Cadbury, a label I endorsed once, before setting off to the States for her next tournament. I feel a sense of oneness on knowing that we are common ambassadors to the brand.

At home Abhishek welcomes me and the rest of the day is just spent in exchanging notes thoughts and ideas. It has been a while since he and I have spent, what most corporates often mention as ‘quality time’. I enjoy the conversation. He does most of the talking. And I listen.

From films to business to domestic decisions, it is a rewarding moment. We as parents sometimes forget the importance of interaction with our children, particularly so in today’s times. It is immensely valuable to know their minds and what they think. Allowing them their moment of speech gives them not only the confidence of expression, but also their trend of thought – a most important ingredient as they grow into responsible positions.

Our culture has always taught us the importance of the care that is due to those who brought us into this world. If ever I were to express my regrets in life, they would most certainly be the loss of opportunity in spending more time with my Father and Mother. I hope with sufficient resolve that Abhishek never has to entertain such regret. I needed to be with my Father to be able to ascertain the genius of his mind, for now in moments of solitude or moments of reflection, it would be so valuable to know what went on in him before he composed a thought into verse or reminisced in prose. For long I have resisted imposing my presence on Abhishek. The reason being Jaya’s and my desire that he must learn to fight his own battles and be able to stand on his own. That he is fulfilling this deed is commendable, but simultaneously and along with it is the strong desire to advise, to impart, to educate him with the ways of the world. Sometimes in doing so there is hesitation. Often I wonder if his reckoning be not better than mine and if this be true, would I not be perhaps misguiding him by imposing my own lopsided theory. These and other such complications crowd my mind and I keep away. But I think that is incorrect. It never harmed anyone in speaking out. You will either be corrected or followed. Both of which are beneficial.

The latter half of the evening has been spent in front of the mirror and with prosthetics. As the shooting draws near an excitement begins to pulsate. Abhishek and Vidya Balan , my co stars in ‘PA’ also come in for make up and dress trials. The office where all this is being conducted looks full and busy with all walks of personnel connected with the production moving about in busy fashion. There is muted appreciation of what the others see and observe. It is refreshing when that happens. Pulls you further into performing well.

But by all counts, the feeling of excitement is more the fact that I am home in familiar surroundings than any other. By tomorrow all the others will troupe in to Mumbai. The house shall be functional to optimal again. I love a full house. Lots of people busying around. Children, grand children running about the place, various activities taking place in different sections of the house. The ladies in the kitchen, the men desperately trying to lend a helping hand, mostly for effect. The TV running a current cricket match or an important football game. The sound of support and exhilaration on a victory or the desolation of a defeat. The dog barking his participation. Staff moving about carrying errands and odd jobs. Sound levels at a high.

Just such a warm and affectionate moment this …

I have not been able to respond adequately to the many comments that have been so diligently put up. But I shall. The Reid and Taylor presentation will be sorted out and that took up some time in discussion. Perhaps a small aesthetic presence may not be harmful. Lets see…

Get to bed now.. it is late for all

My love to you in abundance …

Wrapped from the film, ‘Johnny Mastana’, which in this generations terminology means the last shot for the film is done and you are free.

We have finished ahead of schedule.. yet again. An occurrence that seldom happens here in this industry. Most of the time we are struggling with excess dates and a schedule that just refuses to get over.

It becomes a moment of celebration and joy when an artist wraps from the film. The director announces the moment, the unit claps and applauds, a group photograph with all members of the unit is taken, there is a smile on everyone’s face and the actor departs.

My smile came on much later.. after I had removed mountains of hair from my face. But disappeared rapidly as I drove back to the Hotel  to another trial of make up for ‘PA’ . This has just gotten over and even after a hot shower, bits and pieces of prosthetics linger irritatingly all over the body. It almost feels to an outsider as though I were losing all my skin !!

There is consternation from some quarters on the Reid & Taylor presence. I understand the sentiments of the readers and have spoken to the server. They are working on it and I shall have a response shortly. We may not be able to get rid of it entirely but we are trying to get a reduced and a more aesthetic presence.

I am delighted to note from most, the reaction to my last blog and my effort to illuminate the media operation in detail. As predicted in the blog how the media under reference would respond, they have done exactly that. My sense of ethics does not permit me to name individuals or the contents of their reaction. But may I just say, neither my stand nor my position has been compromised. On the contrary there is regret and apology on their part. For me this is enough poetic justice !!

For many posts, there has been a constant request for an account of my association with my various colleagues and directors. I have felt hesitant to submit to this, but since the voices have been rising in their decibels I shall submit and begin gradually writing about them and the films they brought into my life.

I have a task before I can attempt this. It is to write the foreward to Madhushala first, since the book needs to get to print. This is a daunting task. How many son’s have been asked to write forewards to the great genius of their father ? Limited I believe. I find myself among those limited few. I have made a shaky start and shall need all my faculties at my command to be able to accomplish this huge responsibility. If it works out, I shall share it with you. Maybe you can give me some reactions.

Hyderabad comes to an end today. It has been as always a joy to be in this city. The people have been most courteous and kind. At the shootings they have never troubled us, have shown respect and great co- operation and of course their love for our films.

I feel regret at not being able to see some of the wonderful places and structures of importance in this twin city. There is always such great limitations of time and so much to see. I have always wanted to set off on a Bharat Darshan in a car filled with members of my family. To learn to explore this wonderful land of ours. A land where history and culture is written at every corner at every mile. This diverse, unique land called Bharat. Some day I shall.. someday !!

I decorate my presence, from photographs I took at KK and of Abhishek, when we were all together in New York. My decorations are done to bring exuberance perhaps in the lives of extended family. Perhaps a smile or a moment of happiness. That is all I am capable of. There cannot be any doubt, that this medium has been such a boon to my existence, it cannot be evaluated. Many of you observe my dedication in being with you every day. Wrong. It is the desire to be with you that pushes me along. And so it is that I decorate. it is akin to decorating my house, for that special visit when guests are to arrive. But this is family.. extended family !

Thank you for being in my life..

With love and more..

Day 308

Hyderabad, AP                                  February 25, 2009                             12:32 pm

” One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about battles that go on inside people. He said, ‘My son the battle is between two wolves inside us. One is evil. It is anger, envy, regret, greed, arrogance, resentment, false pride and ego. The other is good. It is joy, peace , love, compassion, truth, humility, generosity and faith.’

The grandson thought about it for a moment and then asked his grand father -

‘Which wolf wins ?’

The old Cherokee simply replied -

‘The one you feed !’

A short overnight visit to Mumbai, home, family and then back to the grind. Which I might add is fast nearing completion. Another 2 days of fungusitus, if ever such a word existed and we are through for ‘Johhny Mastana’.

Fungus over. Prosthetics take over ! They come in in the morrow and shall work on me when the other work is complete. Its like going from one bakery to the other and not a slice of bread in reward. My perils continue. But they are the essence of my work, a work that keeps me in touch with the EF, in touch with myself and sometimes with my soul.

Meanwhile picking words from my blog and distorting them mischievously to bring me up in bad light continues to plague the media. Methinks they seem unsettled with my thoughts. Perhaps their dominance over a medium they entirely controlled begins to leak. Albeit in very minute strains.

They take my comment of ‘Slumdog is ok and Delhi 6 not’ in isolation and do not give reference to the  context, so that they can invite negative and abusive reactions towards me . With SM’s stupendous victory who is this idiot called Amitabh Bachchan to compare it with a D6 ! But of course they fail to give the entire story. Let me do that for you.

Some respondents on my blog express anguish over SM’s content; its attempt to show India’s ugly underbelly. I say in response, a dirty underbelly exists even in developed countries. I put out all the comments fairly on the blog and invite debate. Media, wrongly, or now, deliberately, takes that as my personal comment and makes a dashing headline – Amitabh slams SM !! I have done no such thing. But because media has put it out, this very honorable and incorruptible medium must be believed. The comment attracts huge negativity and abuse towards me. One of the sharp and slicing being, people who criticize the contents of SM are sour graped and blinkered imbeciles and behave in such a fashion because SM and Danny Boyle have shown a mirror of the actual Mumbai and that is real and uncomfortable for them. Fine. Arguments and comments continue.

Now..

Delhi 6 releases to critical comment and the main refrain from same source, is that Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra, the director of the film, has gone too philosophical and tried to show a mirror to the audience, which is his and the film’s undoing. We do not wish to spend so much money to go to a multiplex to be shown a mirror of our society and city.

And here is where I come in ..

And I say… you laud and praise SM because it has shown the viewer a mirror to real Mumbai, yet when ROM shows a mirror in D6 to his viewers it is wrong and undesired.

So.. I concluded..

Showing mirror in SM is ok.. and in D6 is not !  Bas..! End of conversation.

But because the media is beyond correction, beyond its pristine purity, it does not like to be told or to be pointed out as having erred. So… attack the person that has dared or has the temerity to challenge the fourth estate !!

Seeing the accolades that SM is collecting, deservedly for our Indian talent, the media brings my comment out in a light that seems to disagree with the distinction that SM is getting. This gives rise to a huge amount of enraged reaction to Mr Bachchan, letters to the editor flow in, or who knows, get manufactured in their own offices, printed then in the letters to the editor column, merely to justify and endorse the stand taken by that particular news paper. Pretty simple mathematics here. You do not need an enlightened brain to decipher that, do you.

After the euphoria of the win at Oscars is in progress, media, because it needs sale-able celebrity voices on its pages starts putting out questions to them and seeking reactions to the victory. Obviously it is a great moment for Indian talent. We do express that in our response. But hidden inside the questionnaire is another smart one.

They ask us, do you think this hoopla for the Oscars is justified ?!!??!!!       Ha.. ha .. ha..COL for PS !!

This is the side winder.

They themselves are involved in the hoopla !! They are the ones writing and headlining and filling page after page of Oscaramia. And to satisfy, or should I say cover up their own conscience, will put out this question to us to demonstrate what a truly fair, unbiased and democratic principle the media house follows. When we give our response they shall pick out words again and put it up to show what a balanced attitude  media takes !!

Really…

They will catch Jaya outside Parliament and direct her response to further add to their front page story of how the Bachchan family is against the Oscars, because she has stated that SM is not an Indian film so what is the big deal.

All the material spoken in favor of the event. All the material spoken in lauding Indian talent. All side lined and hidden. It is the alarming and controversial comment put up in bold headlines, in order to put us in bad light.

I am putting for your benefit some of the press articles that came out in this and other regard. They are all written by very senior and respected journalists and written in the editorial column. Read them carefully and in depth and assuage yourselves whether what has been expressed by us is in any way worthy of being termed negative or disrespectful either to the event or to the winners.

My interview to DNA, the way I gave it. Compare it to the way it has been presented.

Shubha,

Sir,
Here are the questions we would like to ask you….

Do you think too much hoopla is being made about the Oscars…are we giving too much importance to what seems like just an award ceremony in the US? or do you think its big enough to deserve the kind of attention it does?

ANS//
This is a typical media exercise. Ha..! Start something, then look for celebrity endorsement for or against it, highlight comments made, headline them, initiate controversy and thereby guarantee several good copy. By the end of it, the perpetrator of this ‘crime’ is lost and forgotten and some vulnerable celebrity has his neck dangling on the anvil.
Who is the ‘we’ that you talk of in the question. Surely you will not hesitate in agreeing that the media through its powerful medium is the creator of this hoopla. Your argument in defence shall be, we are merely reflecting the voice or the conscience of the people and inviting comment through the principles of fair journalisim. All very well and clear. Its what follows afterwards that brings in the discomfort.
The Oscars is a film award ceremony conducted in the US. Through the years it has built itself into a powerful brand that now unabashedly conveys that it is the very best in the world. It is a matter of personal belief and choice whether one believes in that or not. Or whether it deserves the kind of attention that it does. Live with this, I would suggest. Why the unnecessary verbal jargon on it. We respect the respect of the Oscars as we would any institution that honours excellence and rewards it. Big enough small enough, important not important is not up for debate.

2. Do you think we should be looking at Oscars as the ultimate parameter to judge a film, considering that the films of other countries, especially Asian countries, have entirely different cultural flavours and perhaps the finer naunces could escape the judges there?

ANS//
For me the ultimate parameter to judge a film has been the audience. Their reward is the biggest and the best and the most lasting. But this is my personal choice. As I said earlier, we respect the Oscars. They are an American Award ceremony, conducted to honour films made in English and in the US. They also honour films from other countries under a special section and we acknowledge that. I would presume that they have set themselves conditions and parameters within which they would assess the merits of films that come up for consideration. Who are we to comment on the veracity of their judging system ? Do you ever question why Filmfare, or Screen, Zee, Stardust and our National Awards not consider Hollywood films or films from other nations for reward ? Do you question the judging system of these institutions ? Barring of course the National Awards, because they are Government Awards and under democratic and constitutional norms subject to question and answerability.

3. Do you think our films deserve much more attention than what we have recieved from the Oscars till date? Is it time that we are more proud of our movies than we are?

ANS//
I find this question funny. As a child I can ask my parents to consider me as deserving of more attention. As a citizen of India I can ask my Government to give me more attention. I can ask my wife to give me more attention and be deserving of it. But the Oscars are not my parents or my Government or my wife. Who am I then to question whether our films are deserving of more attention by them. They are an independent and a foreign institution, we honour and respect them.
We are very proud of our film Industry and our movies. What is ‘more proud’ ? One can either be proud or not proud, but ‘more proud’ I am unable to understand. And just being ‘more proud’ is not going to get you ‘more’ deserving attention from the Oscars Academy.

4. A lot of films from India, which seemed excellent, have not been able to make it to the Oscars….Do you think they deserved better?

ANS//
Again here the assumption from your question is that the Oscars are the ultimate and final recognition and destination for every film made in the world. You would have to convince me first that they indeed are. Each independent institution has their own yardstick to measure excellence. As things stand they have not found any of our films worthy. Fine. We do not crave for it. If it comes we shall humbly accept and honour it. But then again this is not a generalised statement. It is independent and individual.

5. A few technicians from India (for example Rasool Kutty ) have managed to get the attention of the Oscars, while the actors from India are still to make a mark…What do you attribute this to?

ANS//
Yes true. The reason that Rasool has received attention is because he has worked in a foreign ( English ) film that has received Oscar nomination. When their system of judging feels actors from India deserve an Award we shall respectfully acknowledge it. There have been very few instances when an actor not speaking English in a non English film has been recognised for his acting capabilities. We make films in Indian languages and speak Indian languages.

6. Do you think Indian films need to be marketed better worldwide and its not the quality of the films but lack of exposure that has led to us not getting enough world wide recognition?

ANS//
Yes marketing does play an important part in the furtherance of our products world wide and I believe that very concerted efforts are already in place to enhance our presence beyond Indian shores. English being a more universal language we do feel handicapped there, but I believe cinema is a universal medium and does not need dependence on language for it to be understood. We have come a long way from 60-70 years ago when cinema in India was considered a medium that was infra dig. We have continuously moved ahead and moved forward. We are already attracting a huge amount of attention and its getting better by the day and the hour.

Now my dear EF.. see how they presented it in their paper -

image

The beg to differ column was on front page among all the hysterical and large headlined accolades for the Oscars. In that circumstance this headline conveys negativity. The Q@A column is not on the front page .. it is somewhere on the 13th or 14th page.. so that by the time you get there you have already made up a wrong impression of the subject. Then notice how even the interview is distorted and not given in full. And when you will question the lady that took it she will conveniently say the editorial cut it up, it is not in our hands. heh.. heh..

But lady.. everything was in your hands when you repeatedly sms’d me for urgent reactions, for having deadlines to meet and time restrictions to keep, etc.. Would you want me to post your smses also, that you sent to me ? I do store them on my computer just for such occasions !

Shubha Saha, from DNA, you will definitely not get the co operation that has been willingly and diligently given to you by me, in the future. Trust and faith begets trust and faith.

Dear EF, I now put up very interesting, letters to the editor, in same paper to further fortify the points that I have been making -

See … what I mean  !!

Now for some very interesting articles as I said from serious editorial pages -

In closing…  the cutest sms that came to me in the middle of all this was from Siddharth Basu, the producer of Kaun Banega Crorepati, who managed and set up everything. He said -

“As it snaps up the Oscars like a juggernaut – to think, if there was no KBC, there would be no book, no movie, no moment like this.. it could not have happened without you..”

On replying to him and saying it was all his doing, his team and his management, he replied back -

“Thanks. We were happy to play our part, but you stand alone, sir. That special magic, the mania that even a slumdog could connect with was something you wrought..”

It has been a long night and one that has been full of a lot of reading and assessing. And i do expect many among you to castigate me and tell me and ask me why I need to get into all this for I am above it all…

But dearest EF, you must bear with me and know where I come from. If I do not correct it it shall go down in the annals of media history as fact. A fact that shall keep raising its head from time to time. Despite my denial on the SM matter. Despite my having personally cleared it up by calling Danny and Anil, the accusations and contempt continue. It shall be my bounden duty to counter it every time it is brought up. Your support and courage shall always be valued and respected. Thank you.

With love and more…

Day 307

Prateeksha, Mumbai                                 February 24/25, 2009                               1:26 am

All right !! All right !! I see the frowns on the faces.. 1:26 am and Prateeksha ?? But the guy was shooting in Hyderabad in the morning. How come he’s…
Ya right..Hyderabad in the morning, up early and bright to face more beard and wig and then be struggling on a hospital bed.. in the scene, dearies.. in the scene.. ripping off tubes and wires stuck all over the body, trying to get out of the hospital despite the heavy hand of the nurses and doctors that pin me down. Scene over, rush to remove the fungus on chin and drive to airport to catch the plane to Mumbai..
A quick private visit.. and back to the grind tomorrow morning in Hyderabad. Evenings will be spent in make up tests for ‘PA’.. yes… Los Angeles is back with some stuff that they had struggled to make in the two attempts earlier and now wish to give it a final shape. Work begins by the 2nd of March.

From heavy fungus on face to heavy mask on face. Sometimes because the duration of the face change is vast, it is reassuring to see your own by the end of the day in the mirror. Do we ever forget what the real me is.. well not until we get to reflection in a reflector.. such an ego centric object.
In the solitude of your bathroom, alone and without cover, it is the most humbling experience to be watching yourself in your reality, in the way we were and in the way we were brought to this world, and the way we shall return. Those that possess the luxury of a bathroom will appreciate more what is being expressed.
It is being alone with one’s body and in time with our soul. No one can see you. You talk to yourself, you gesticulate, assess angles and features, confront your reality and contend with it.
That extra grey in the hair, the growing crow feet around the eye, the bulges around the waist and the fake attempts to breathe in to smooth them out.. momentarily of course. In the midst of your personal hygiene, that idea or thought that needs to be remembered, work that needs to be attended to, a response or a chore… all quickly brought to book.
They say some of the best ideas come under the shower and by the time the soap has been washed away they disappear too. So what.. a water proof dictaphone ?? Bloody unlikely mate !!
At this age, it is wise to attend to thought word and deed immediately. Age does not allow us the luxury of immense memory. It disappears from within the brain as suddenly as it comes on. So write it down, scribble, inform assistance, put it on memory in the computer and now with excessive space on the chip, on the mobile.
Life is becoming more and more obsessed with speed and multiple ideas needing undivided attention. They want solutions and its execution at twice the speed of the previous action. Chips they say are working at 20% of the speed of the brain, but soon, they shall work at the speed of the brain and, it may not be too premature to observe, that in time they would be working even faster.
How would the world look and behave when that happens ? If it happens !

I can tell you now what is happening to mine.. It is seriously desiring that I get off this blog and allow it to catch some rejuvenating rest in order for it to be functional at the break of dawn..

Good night dearest ones.. it is rather late.. a few hours and it will back on a plane to Hyderabad..

Day 306

Hyderabad, AP                                      February 23, 2009                             9:40 am

Recently, Headlines Today a TV channel, did a half hour program where they sensationalised an innocuous incident at a function that I was at, stating how Kareena Kapoor had snubbed me, by not giving me a look or even greeting me. It is extremely disturbing to see and hear untruthful reportage, dished out to the public with malicious intent by the media. I wish to put the record straight with this photograph -

image

Media must know that I carry my own camera department at public functions, just so we can counter misuse of the visuals that the, so called professional, media records.

Editing pieces out, putting in back ground music to highlight the version of the story they manufacture, using the wrong expressions, slow motioning shots to accentuate their version, looping it for repeat shots so that a single slap sounds and looks like a hundred, cutting out speeches and using the words out of context from them with male-fide intent … are all indicative of how the medium is being misused. They forget that we have been in the business for over 40 years, we know what cinema and visual shots through the camera are all about, we know how you edit film, we know how sound is placed, we know where back ground music is used to highlight a moment, we know how to sound edit as well and above all we know how we can put and build an entire story by just using some visuals not necessarily having to do anything with the topic of film.

TV is a strong visual medium. It has the capacity to create impressions, sometimes of great lasting effect. My earnest and humble request is that the misuse of a powerful tool is unjust and not within the norms of fair journalism. There can be constructive use of this medium and destructive as well. But destructive use to enhance personal gain is not an acceptable option.

I am nobody to guide or pass judgement or advise how the electronic media should behave or how they need to run their business. But I am a proud citizen of this country and have an equal democratic right to point a mistake, particularly if it personally concerns me and my immediate family.

No one is entirely perfect. Not me certainly. We will make mistakes and we will need to be told when we do. We shall accept criticism in the spirit it is delivered. We shall listen and correct ourselves when error is made. But to be continuously damaged in character through deliberate intent is not fair unbiased journalism.

I have taken up this particular incident because I needed to speak out after exercising great amount of restraint. Many of my blog respondents keep insisting that I should ignore such aberrations and not give them importance by mention. But I am sorry, I will speak. I shall speak because I am confronted with wrong impressions created by the media in the minds of well wishers.

Kareena has grown up in front of me. Our families have known each other, with respect, from the time of her great- grand father, the most respected PrithviRaj Kapoor, father of Shri Raj Kapoor who is the father of Randhir Kapoor her father. Randhir Kapoor’s sister’s son Nikhil Nanda is married to my daughter Shweta. We are therefore ‘samdhi’s’, belonging to one family as per our tradition and culture. Kareena’s grand mother, the dignified and loved Krishna ji, wife of Raj Kapoor and mother to Randhir is looked upon by all of us as the eldest living member of the family. PrithviRaj Kapoor, the great theatre and film personality and legend and the founder member of the Kapoor dynasty in Indian Cinema, was a great admirer of my Father. There have been many childhood memories of Allahabad, where I was born and brought up, when PrithiRaj ji would come over to our house and spend time with his theater group, Prithvi Theaters and my Father.

Kareena and all other members of her family and ours have always given due respect to each other, irrespective of what the circumstances may have been, or what circumstances the media keeps harping on in most nauseating fashion. She is a warm and affectionate person and has never ever given reason for us to feel otherwise. It has been disgusting to see the way this particular TV channel went about building a most reprehensible story around her and her attitude towards us.

A couple of days ago they hankered for Abhishek to come over to their studio while he was in Delhi,  and speak about his latest release ‘Delhi 6′. After he obliged they edited and cut and pasted words from his interview and made the most obnoxious negative story on him and Aishwarya. No mention of the film for which he was invited to speak about.

In conclusion I have just this to say. We are all very proud members of this great country and very proud members of the fraternity of the Indian Cinema. Through our creativity we reach out to millions and billions of people. Whether this is good for the country or not, Indian Cinema has become synonymous with India and is often referred to as its parallel culture. Members of our fraternity have received great adulation and respect the world over. Many among us have received formal recognition from our own and from foreign Governments and institutions. The Indian Film Industry to me has been one of the greatest symbols and examples of our secular state and perhaps one of the largest propagators of national integration. We are all simple hard working individuals with care and compassion as our intrinsic guidelines for existence. We are also human and prone to error just like any other. We deserve to be treated fairly.

To the media therefore and to those that think despicably of us, kindly treat us with a lot more empathy, warmth and sensitivity. When you dishonor us, when you denigrate us, speak of us disparagingly and with contempt and ridicule, remember that somewhere, you dishonor the billions that love us, remember that you disrespect the respect given to us by National and foreign Institutions and Governments, remember that you attempt to destroy the affection that voluntarily flows out from hundreds of unknown individuals and remember lastly, that when you construct hate and negativity against another, you poison your own inner self with the same malaise.

Do not kill yourself in trying to kill others !

And as I write in remote shooting area in Hyderabad, I learn of the great achievements of our Indian technicians and music directors at the Oscars. My warmest and heartiest congratulations to AR Rehman and Resul for winning recognition in music and sound and to Gulzar for co assisting Rehman in the lyric category. International recognition for Indian film talent on one of the most well known and popular forums is the happiest day for Indians and the Industry. The journey of Indian Cinema has been phenomenal.

May it grow even bigger and greater.

With love and without malice …

Day 305 (i)

Hyderabad, AP                           February 23, 2009                         2:19 am

Back !! The shoot was quick and sharp. It was at the famous Char Minar. Great crowd control by the authorities, considering the area is the most congested portion of the city.

Char Minar looked stunning and massive. Never knew it was so large and awe inspiring. Had only been with it in photographs. It had been lit up specially for the shoot in green and white and looked most impressive.

I must to bed now.

Putting up some photographs.. Stardust Awards, and crowds and visitors every Sunday outside Jalsa – a practice that started in 1982 and has never been broken a single Sunday since. I am so humbled.

And that finally is Shanuk.. my Piranha Dane.. waiting patiently at the gate that has just witnessed the Sunday crowds and wondering what all the fuss was about.. because we were holding up his… would you believe.. his rickshaw ride – one that he enjoys greatly.. his face may not show it but he does..

image

Cool eh..??

And then of course the media circus.. persistent, in your face and all around it..

image

image

And more crowds.. different days, same clothing and hand gestures.. but another Sunday.. !!

”In order for the light to shine so brightly, the darkness must be present.”

“Be thankful if your work is a little harder than you want. A knife cannot be sharpened on a piece of velvet.”

I now believe that it is contagious. This association of ours. I am committed to sleep and rest and recover, but my desire to be with EF is just so compelling that I am unable to tear myself away from it..

Wishing AR Rehman and Rasool the very best for the Oscars !!

I shall end now reluctantly.. my love..

( and the moment I said that.. a few quick yawns sneaked in..!!)

Day 305

Hyderabad, AP                         February 22, 2009                      7:5 pm

5 am !! Ready to go to work.. to get bearded and wigged and start.. but..

A last minute VIP movement in the area made us cancel the permission and we were not allowed to shoot. Shall have to schedule this for later. So jumped back into bed to catch up on much needed rest and spent the day responding to two journalists with their questionnaires, the details I shall only present when they have published theirs.

It was also spent in front of the TV.. well NDTV to be exact.. watching Abhishek setting out to break the Guinness World record of making the maximum number of public appearances in 12 hours in different cities. And as I write I am happy to inform all that he actually has.. He had to do 5, I think, cities and he just finished Chandigargh after Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, Noida, Faridabad, Delhi and is on a plane now to Mumbai to PVR JUHU and that will end his record journey. He will in fact have bettered the previous record. All the public functions have to have certain given formats to be complied with – a red carpet, sign autographs, interact with the fans, and do TV interactions. And he has done that at all these places by attending the screening of D6, an exercise incorporated by the Producers in the promotional activities designated and designed.

I await instructions now for the night shoot. I believe it will only start after 11 pm. Hmm… when the world will be getting ready to turn in , yours truly shall be struggling to stick wig and beard with the dreaded gum, that burns and irritates and takes ages to come off. And.. gives me asthma every time the bottle is opened !! So you keep the Asthalin pump ready, inhale the medication, hold your breath and submit to  dear old Deepak Sawant, my make up artist for over 30 years.

There have been comments on the blog relating to the fact that for some days now I have been unable to send responses to those that write back. This is deeply regrettable and I must apologize for it. I will certainly send in responses. I need time and that has not been coming. When I do get the time I find myself weighing the odds first. Do I write a post or do I respond to comments. And invariably writing the post wins. But do not despair, the comments shall be coming shortly.

OK…  its time to leave. I shall be back.. perhaps very late at night !! And if the gum has not sufficiently irritated my countenance, I shall write.. or comment again..

My love..

Day 304

Hyderabad, AP                              February 21, 2009                       10:47 pm

Its “Johnny Mastana” again.. and in Hyderabad now. This city, with such an exciting and historic past and, a city now which moves towards a historic future. The building of modern and resilient infrastructures, of adapting to fresh and dynamic ideas and leading towards a dream that can only signify progress and development.

The new airport a little distant from the city is massive and efficient and systematic. The approach and the surroundings elegant and attractive. It fills one with pride to be able to see such construct, within your own country. I pray and wish it remains so.

Ramoji Rao City, that 5000 acres of studio some 45 mins away is where we work. A massively spread out facility , where we have done some wonderful films. Named after the media baron, it is a one stop shop. Move in there with a script. Move out with a film. It has all that it takes to accomplish that. Marvellous !!

I am grateful for some of the reactions that have come in for D6 from the EF. Both positive and negative. We must never be too obsessed with the positive nor too depressed with the negative. The sincerity of the work must come through. That is what pays eventually.

I can understand personal opinions that respondents make, but what baffles me are the reviews of critics. These individuals are the masters of the game. They are trained and knowledged in the job. Their opinion counts and forms the basis of analysis in attracting the customer to the theatre. So how feasible is their report when their observations differ to such an extreme and large extent.

One exults, ‘ its the greatest piece of cinema seen in a long time ‘. Simultaneously the very next review screams ‘the film is a waste of time’. Or words to that effect. One states ” this is Abhishek’s best and most mature performance “. And the other contradictorily says just the opposite. One lauds the sensitivity of the premise, the other laments the absence of it. One says its actually ‘black’, the other lives with ‘white’. No .. Not a lesser shade of black or a warmer shade of grey.. no… its black and white .. period !

So which opinion does one go by – if going by their opinion is what viewers seek.

Media reports coming out within a day of the release, then become yardsticks of judgement. But opinions that are poles apart, merely explain this – it is best to see it yourself and make your own assessment. Like it or hate it at least you have the satisfaction of not having been misled.

There is then the quotient of bias and deliberate intent, where personal equations come into play in complete disregard of the code of journalistic conduct. If you have through no deliberation spoken to one electronic channel in some priority of time, you will most certainly be reduced to rubble by other rival ; merits be damned. Planted vox populai, or what is now commonly termed as ‘voxpox’ by the community, will be brought in front of visiting camera crew to spew venom and to deride creative effort.

And it is all based on one common principle. Be first, rather than be correct.

So how does one contend. Does one retaliate by striking one of them off your list. Do you publicly refuse one against the other. There are hundreds of them now, coming out of the woodwork in droves, millimeters away from your face. Ready to take any visual of yours connected or not, editing it, adding a story, slow motion and devastating background score and putting it up as a half hour program for the hungry viewer starved for sensation.

Or.. does one rest with the theory that ‘ you never take on someone that buys ink in barrels ‘ !!

Somewhere a stand to be taken is what most advise. They need you to fill in the glamor, you need them to fill in the promotion. Those that know how to balance this live an enchanted life. An average performance will come out as brilliant. And brilliance shall lose all its light, in the manner it is projected out. You could be living the rest of your life in deceit and false claims or you could live it in the strength of your conscience and its integrity.

I have chosen the latter for the most portion of my celebrated life. I have done the other too, but not been comfortable with it. Primarily because there is a sense of lingering impurity in the first. The latter is more honest and strong. It is however not enough to be so. In a world of entire dishonesty, your honesty ends up looking dishonest and questionable. It is a curse for mankind/womankind to be in these circumstances.

On my way back from New Delhi the morning after the premier of Delhi 6, I happened to bump into an old acquaintance from my days in Parliament. She has survived and suffered the turmoils of a political existence in trying circumstances. Is a prominent spokesperson of her party, often defending it and its policies on debates in the electronic. She talks to me of the recent happenings in the courts in Chennai and the intervention of the police inside these august bodies. She talks to me of the manner in which the Justices of the  Supreme Court of India, a body that decides on the life and deaths of individuals, that have the powers bestowed on them through the Constitution, to dismiss entire Governments, have refused to declare their personal assets, a task mandatory  for all public servants, an exercise they feel challenges their integrity. And in order to seek justice have moved a petition in the High Court for a decision. She laments in grave wonderment where this would lead to. If say the High Court were to rule against it, the matter would be legible for appeal in the Supreme Court. What then, she says would happen in this piquant and completely bizarre situation. The Supreme Court would have to sit in judgement on its own appeal !!

” Our systems are collapsing !”, she concludes in agitated concern.

And as I reminisce her moment and her words, I wonder.  If the keepers of our Constitution, the forming bodies of our laws and acts feel so strongly on the collapse of our systems, then our little insignificant, disenchanted spark that surrounds us, does not really hold up much hope.

The ever vigilant and dedicated Fatima from South Africa has been warning me of internet sites that are airing D6, illegally. I have been dutifully passing this on to the Producer, who keeps assuring me that they have moved in getting it removed. But they go off for a while and come back again. How does one fight such blatant flaunting..

The system.. the system.. needs strength.. needs an honesty… needs to look within.. a philosophy, ironically, portrayed so beautifully in ‘Delhi 6′, and an aspect, so mercilessly criticized in the reviews and opinions !

Are we being reluctant and fearful then, of looking into ‘the mirror’ ??

But… just the other day the same learned critics, had derided those that had expressed negative opinion on ‘SlumDog Millionaire’, vociferously defending the contents of the film, by arguing, that those that opposed it, did so because they were reluctant to accept someone who was showing them a mirror !!

So then, metaphorically speaking, or should it rather be, philosophically speaking, what are we saying -

SlumDog is ok and Delhi 6 not ??

My love for you .. somewhat in confusion .. ha !!

> You have a bunch of films coming up –Rann, Johnny Mastana, Pa, Teen Patti and
> Aladdin. What’s special about the role that you have played in each?
>
> ANS//
> For me every role or film that I work on is special. The films that you
> mention therefore are in no way any different ; they all form a part of the
> challenge that actors seek in their profession.
> I have always admired the directorial sense of Ram Gopal Varma and his
> capacity to keep putting me in situations that test me creatively. He has an
> innovative style of film making and has always attempted to explore minute
> details of situations in life, thrusting them upon his artist, to tackle them
> with a veracity that may have eluded them before. Rann, is another attempt
> from him to do similar with me. It is his look at the media and he puts it in
> an important position in his vision.
> Pa, is with Balki and is with him after Cheeni Kum. He has, not just in his
> commercial advertising world but in film too, desired the unusual. Pa will be
> putting both Abhishek and me in a most challenging situation.
> Teen Patti, is Leena Yadav, a lady and that by itself makes it different and
> exciting. It is wonderful to see a woman’s point of view in a medium dominated
> by men and wonderful to see women asserting their worth and value and talent.
> I wait anxiously to see the results of this film, which is now complete,
> barring a two day shoot overseas. It has been a great joy working with a host
> of my colleagues here and the fresh and young beginners that have all excelled
> themselves in this story, developed through an inspiration from real life

> Aladin, is Sujoy Ghosh. Young and energetic and sensitive to film and sound
> and music and technology. It is contemporary, yet fantastical. It is a story
> that is known to all and I play the Genie. It is Sujoy’s take on the subject
> and it is indeed novel.
> Lastly, Johnny Mastana. Another inspired work by Shoojit Sarkar. Another
> director from the world of advertising and another novel idea.
> For the moment therefore I can safely say, that all the roles spelt out above
> have been special yes, but also put me in situations I may not have been in

> Abhishek says it’s work that keeps you going. Do you agree?
>
> ANS//
> Yes I would. But more than that, the heart. Both metaphorically and
> physically. If there is no heart, the body and mind will never move in unison.
> This profession demands that. The most ridiculous and exaggerated

>
> Do you feel the same kind of adrenalin-rush each time you face the camera?

>
> How would you describe yourself as — religious or spiritual?
>
> ANS//
> Religious defines itself as relating to belief in religion, or following the
> practices of religion. Showing and believing in devotion and reverence to
> deity or deities. Belonging to a monastic order.
> Spiritual – relating to soul and spirit usually in contrast to material
> things, to religious and sacred things rather than worldly, connected by an

> Describing oneself, I would imagine, is one of the more difficult tasks that

>
> ANS//
> FLUBBER  !!
>
> Does insecurity still bog you down? Do you have your vulnerable moments?
>
> ANS//
> Every day is an insecure day for me. And every moment vulnerable.
>
> Does the release of a film unnerve you still?
>
> ANS//
> Yes ! Yes ! ( I added the second one just so I don’t sound too monotonous )
>
> Having seen maddening fame and fortune, what has kept you so sane and rooted?
>
> ANS//
> You would have to do some intense home work before asking this.
> Define, maddening fame, fortune, sane and rooted.
> And while you are at it let me enlighten you by responding, that whatever may

> that, are peripheral and do not form an intrinsic part of my existence.
> For me it is quite fulfilling to learn that you acknowledge a certain saneness
> and rooted quality in me, whatever that defines !
>
> Your life is perhaps even more intriguing than a film script. Would you like
> to be born as Amitabh Bachchan again and again? Why?

> ANS//
> There you go again delivering assessments, not of my reckoning. But yes, I
> would like to be born as Amitabh Bachchan again and again and again. Not
> because I am enamoured by that ‘intriguing script’ you seem to have imagined,
> but because I would like to be born again as my father’s and mother’s child.
> The son or daughter of Dr Harivansh Rai and Teji Bachchan !
>
> What are those qualities in your father, the late Dr Harivanshrai Bachchan,
> which you wish to possess too?
>
> ANS//
> The joy and the purpose of my life would be over if I were to possess even one
> of the incredible qualities of my Father. The joy and purpose of my life is to

>
> ANS//
> In the context of the above response, this question seems irrelevant. But I

> should have no objection to you using said material for your purpose. But if
> you were to push me against the wall I would just summarise with a few words –
> beauty, fragrance, spirit, tranquillity and fight !!
>
> What are the ways in which you miss her?
>
> ANS//
> The ways in which any son would miss his Mother. The comfort and embrace of
> her lap when you return home tired and frustrated with the struggles of every

> defeat and failure. The caress of her soft hands on your head, assuring us

> Do you believe that the heart never wrinkles? What are the things that you

Back in the surrounds of home again. Back in front of the camera. And back to the EF, for which there is great joy.

Yesterday was full of travel and premier and getting together, albeit shortly. Everyone came in from different directions and then congregated at the theatre for ‘Delhi 6′. Abhishek in from Dubai, Aishwarya from Kolkata, and I in from Mumbai; Jaya already there because of Parliament.

This was my second visit to the film in two days and I enjoyed it better the second time around.

‘Delhi 6′ is a unique film. Authentic and timeless. Faultless and sincere. It is a mirror on todays society, its complications and its frailties. It addresses cultures and beliefs, human nature and influences. Despite all the posturing it is never in your face with psuedo sincere monologues, or played to the gallery expositions. There is just enough – subtle, restrained and eloquent all in one.

I am most impressed with the film. I am most impressed with the nuances that it has presented, both in structure and performance. Every character so beautifully cast and etched. Every dialogue, sufficient and effective. Brevity never sounded more sincere than it did in Delhi 6 and it echoed through out, just as dominantly as the voices of the lead pair under the Taj Mahal dome in Agra.

The mirror to society is cleverly, even physically demonstrated through the ‘mad’ baba, who maniacally keeps appearing in the streets holding up a mirror to the characters in the film. It is the basis of the theme of the film. Look into the mirror it says and you shall discover that somewhere in a corner of your being you know that there is no space for hatred and malice. Discord and retaliation. Anger and violence…

‘zarre zarre mein usika noor hai,

jhaankh khud mein wo na tujhase door hai..’

In every little particle there is the goodness of His presence. Look into yourself, it is not far from you.

Hatred and discord are formed by circumstances not of our reckoning. But when presented with motive they begin to destroy not just yourself but other innocents as well. If we were to share the love only that lay cuddled in a corner of our hearts, what a wonderful world this universe would be.

And this from an Indian born American, coming to his Motherland to escort his grandmother, because she wants to spend her last days in her place of birth, is the revelation.

Communities in Chandni Chowk, or Delhi 110006, the postal code of the city, now referred to commonly as Delhi 6, live in secular belief, harmony and practice. Their peace is being broken by this mysterious black beast that attacks people in the dark of the night – a factual incident that took place in old Delhi some years ago. No one was able to see it or catch it, but regularly its victims increased. This has been symbolically taken into the story of the film as being that hidden black monkey within all of us. That conscience which governs and runs us.

To me the credit title roll, the time when the audience gets up and leaves, is the most poignant moment in the film. Credit titles on one end and a blank mirror at the other end of the screen, form the visual. And one by one the characters in the film come and stand to look at themselves. And after pondering at it for an extended period of time, change their nature through expression, conveying that they have all realized the presence of this symbolic black monkey within. It is cinema at its best.

Indian popular cinema has through years and years established a given format of creativity and success. The audience has been bludgeoned into believing this escapist extended culture to be the accepted norm. This is how people live and survive, eat and dress, sing and dance. It is a fantasticised escapist realization. And its repeated acceptance qualifies itself as recognized entertainment. Any deviation from it is considered sub standard or with blemish.

In the middle of all this comes a truer film. Closer to the earth, realistic yet having the strains of commerce and it poses a vicious challenge. You cannot criticize it, for, its theme preaches love and abolition of hatred. It is devoid of the typical ‘snap your finger and a hundred dancers in some elaboration appear almost ghost like and sing and dance to their merriment’ satraps. The location cannot be discussed – it is factually there and prospering. Music, an intrinsic part of our film, is the best that AR has done in many years, yet it is not stage designed as items.

Delhi 6 is that film that I find hard to criticize. I cannot put my finger on it and neither can I withdraw.

Someone yesterday made an interesting comment. Films today are subjected to so much marketing and promotion, it seems almost embarrassing to say that the film did not work.

If so..

It will be embarrassing for me to say the film did not work ; and I have not yet been subjected to any marketing and promotion.

There will be some debate on this I am certain. In the meantime..

Day 302

Prateeksha, Mumbai                    February 19, 2009                     9:43 am

I prepare to leave for Delhi for Delhi 6 ! Abhishek has just landed from Dubai into Delhi, after the premier in Dubai. Aishwarya shooting on the outskirts of Kolkata will come in by the evening to Delhi and Jaya is already there because of Parliament. It is these strange travel combinations that bring us together nowadays. Premier in New York, premier in Delhi.. and i have no idea where the next premier will be.

It is distracting to be away. But not something that can be avoided. Soon I would believe, we would all have to just put our foot down, take a break and go off somewhere to just be together.

There are photographs that need to be shared. There is greater text that needs to be written. But… I can either do that or miss my flight, something that would not be very prudent. So… my EF’s knowing your great understanding for me and my terrible circumstances, you will pardon this rushed post.

I shall endeavor more from different location. Or perhaps from the plane…!!

Day 301

Prateeksha, Mumbai                February 18/19, 2009                 1:36 am

Another severe day. Another day of endless issues.

But the desire to continue, keeps goading one on. I value tremendously the concern and advice by extended family, but there are matters that require attention and that cannot be shirked.

Amidst all the attention that was required that was work related I was happy to have visited Shahrukh and to have found him cheerful and recovering. There is pain and his left arm is in a sling, but all else is fine. I conveyed some of the wishes that came for him via the blog.

I shall convey more in the morning or from New Delhi where I go now to attend the premier of Delhi 6.

love,

Amitabh Bachchan

Day 300

Prateeksha, Mumbai                               February 17, 2009                            12:00 midnight

I wonder when you multitask, do your faculties suffer or improve.

I believe when the environment changes, the mind shifts gears and starts afresh. Or am I just being plain stupid !

6 in the morning at the gymnasium as you drive yourself there, gives you a sense of having physically moved yourself into some mobility. Essential since, any stagnant behavior clutches the body in excruciating pain ; at this age any way.

While you gym, the mind does not necessarily concentrate on the weight that you push or the repetitions that you perform on the bench. It also pays attention to the sound on the system, the music that is played with some volume, to inspire one to enjoy the ordeal of exercise or motivate it towards performing adequately.

There is also simultaneously the TV screen that runs on different channels – sport, news, music video, trailers of coming films, general knowledge information, preaching, astrology on how the day shall shape for one, the weather…

The mind registers all that. Registers it more as you begin your yogic breathing. As you shut your eyes, images and thoughts appear. Some you wish aside, others you allow to linger. Those that linger tend to be disturbing, yet you do not allow it to break concentration.

This 2 hour occupation then transforms itself into correcting the traffic violations as you drive home, made incessantly in a blatant manner. Breaking signals, driving and taking turns from wrong positions. Pedestrians walking up the wrong way on the middle of the road ; mobile stuck to their ears and in animated conversation. And a host of other such..

At home a general inspection tour of the property. Plants well watered and in place, lawn mowed, pavement washed and then… out in the sun with the paper work of the office ; letters, opinions, requests, schedules, travel, HRD, staff queries, documentation..

News to be read.. incorrect information  to be corrected… trends and bent of particular media to be noticed and assessed. Phone calls to anniversaries, response to a million press sms on mobile, connecting to loved ones in different parts of the world and then..

The appointments.

Balki comes over for a final narration of ‘PA’ ; dress, look, screenplay, song and music, co artists, story and screenplay fineries. Before this ends, phone calls on various other domestic matters have been in progress. From film there is a switch to Sujoy Ghosh and a commercial that he directs for Emami. Discuss the creatives, not happy with the song that has been recorded, a desire to redo it, personal participation required.. but how ??

Monitoring Abhishek in New York and Aishwarya in Kolkata.. there travel, safety, accommodation.

Sujoy again.. we need to get to a studio to record. Without my input he says we cannot move forward. A quick shower and off to V@S studio. In the car a utilization of travel and traffic time – office paper work. In the studio and a change of environment. From personal physical upkeep to news analysis to film script narration to music.. and we have still not crossed noon.

The song is reshaped. I sing something for reference. They flip. This is what we want, this is it. I say I was just pfaffing. No it is it. Will you come and record it later while we set up the music. I have a busy day still ahead. I shall get back.

Back home and the staff is worried. I have not eaten yet. It is 4.30pm !!  Ok bring it in quickly and nothing too complicated, need to rush off again.

ShahRukh has been in hospital for a surgery. I had sent him a message for his speedy recovery. He calls back to thank and inform that he is home. Was getting depressed in hospital he says so came away. Oh ! I was planning on visiting you in hospital. Come home sir, we shall play some games. Do not take after surgery too lightly I warn him, take rest and do not get into any kind of activity. He sounds a little groggy. I shall visit him tomorrow.

The schedule in Hyderabad, where I go next for ‘Johnny Mastana’, needs fine monitoring. Permissions are difficult, timings and dates must be adhered to. But there are at least three important issues that have to be attended to out of Hyderabad. It will mean coming in to the city in the morning flying out at night to another, complying with duties and fly back to work. One such visit being out of the country. In between while I shoot for JM, PA make up team from LA wants to come in for final tests for three days. Ok send them to Hyderabad. When I finish shoot in the late evening we can do that till late night.

Its now time to set of to FICCI FRAMES and the IIFA function at Powai. 10 years of both the organizations. Me Brand Ambassador for one will have to attend. It is formal and well attended. Diplomats from the American Embassy, Senators from Washington, artists from Hollywood, civil rights activists who worked closely with Martin Luther King jr, its 50 years since his visit to India, fellow colleagues and the media….

Danny Glover that consummate character artist from Hollywood there in great humility. We have met on a few occasions in Cannes. He is warm and affectionate. Has been an admirer of my films and never hesitates to express his appreciation on them whenever he meets me. He is being decorated by FICCI-IIFA at this Global Convention and after his award starts his speech by paying tribute to ‘the greatest actor in the world Mr Amitabh Bachchan’. I am embarrassed beyond repair. If there was space beneath my chair I would have disappeared in there. There are presentations to other friends as well – Priety, Kareena, Priyanka, Shilpa and yours truly again. Speeches follow. Indo American connections, Mahatma Gandhi and his inspiration to Martin Luther, non violence movements, protection of civil rights, bonds of friendship through the fraternity of entertainment…

And I quietly slip away..

They wait for me at the studio for the song.

At the studio again and from diplomacy and FICCI to a ditty for a brand of hair oil !! Write it, sing it, record it and rush out to finish one final meeting in the office. Dinner, dinner.. the kitchen is screaming. Later.. send it to Prateeksha. Just gulped a few spoonfuls as I punch in on the comp. Cannot just cannot hit the sack without the EF…

MULTITASKING  !!!

A full day. It is now 1:34 am. A few hours and up at 5:00 am to pay respects at Haji Ali Dargah and Siddhivinak Temple, before getting into an endless list of meets with… oh well.. it is beyond… so shall let it be.. I can already see and hear voices of dissent coming from EF…

Alright.. alright.. to bed and rest..

Good night

Day 299

Janak, Mumbai                                    February 16, 2009                           10:02 pm

Thank you all in the extended family for your greetings and good wishes for the award.. but you must know deep down, that the greatest award has been your love and affection and your support. This is bigger than all the rewards of the world put together. You saw me through a medium that projected me in a light that adhered to you. You liked what you saw. You applauded what I did and how I conducted myself and then repeatedly kept acknowledging my work through all these years.. 40 years is not something you can wish away. It is a lifetime. To remain connected for a lifetime is an achievement by itself. There can only be gratitude and nothing more. I am blessed to have you in my life..

The cycle of life moves on. It brings fresh faces and ideas and compulsions. It brings commitment and challenge and hope and fulfillment. And desire. Desire to do better, to improve, to take a stand. To be uncertain and insecure. Afraid and hesitant. Because…

When you are all these.. life becomes beautiful. I want to lead a beautiful life, we all do. With respect and admiration for all that it throws in our path. When we shall respect and admire what life gives us, we become enlightened and strong.

At 80 plus years it was amazing to see Dev Saheb receive a lifetime achievement award last night. He appeared on stage, dressed as a young fashion conscious man, spoke as though he had just started his career and joyously looked forward to the umpteenth film he was making. His spirit and mind in tact and the bounce in his step pronounced, he signified the true meaning of a life spent on his terms and conditions.

My 40 years, and its reference seemed dull and futile almost, in front of this great recognition given to Mr Dev Anand’s craft. His years and years of service to this marvelous industry. His undying spirit and his love for life.

May God bless him with good health and may he continue to be a source of inspiration to the coming generations..

I miss the peace and quiet of Kanya Kumari. I miss it because it gave me time and space to contemplate, to think, to analyze my thoughts and feelings. In the bustle of Mumbai there is this great big machine that continuously keeps urging you to perform, to get activated. There is hardly time to breathe and hence hardly time to put ones thoughts in correct perspective. Much, therefore that I put down today, has a certain vacuous strain. There is much to say but it is being said in a preoccupied environment. It is not a state that one enjoys being in. So there must be pardon sought for any fall in quality or substance.

Discussions and meetings firming up future projects take up much of the day – Pa, RGV’s next now being co produced by the producer’s of Ghajini, as also Chenab Gandhi of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The calendar is filling up and the prospects of all members of the family spending time together fast diminishing. We are all there but not there.

It is now 1:43 am. The head just nodded off. My location has shifted from Janak to Prateeksha. I think it should rightly shift to my pillow..

Good night and god bless..

Day 298

Prateeksha, Mumbai              February 15, 2009                 11:49 pm

OKKKAAAYYYY !!!

JUST BACK FROM the STARDUST AWARDS… AND…. YOURS TRULY… HAS WON… BEST ACTOR FOR ‘LAST LEAR’…

I AM SOOO.. HAPPY FOR THE MAKERS AND THE DIRECTOR – PLANMAN AND RITUPARNO GHOSH, FOR THE FAITH IN THE FILM AND THE COURAGE TO MAKE SOMETHING AWAY FROM THE NORM…

Also I cannot but get a bit nostalgic. Its the 15th of February 2009. On the 15th of February 1969, today, 40 years ago, I signed my first film Saat Hindustani and entered the film industry.

40 years !! Been a while. Struggles and uncertainties, successes and disappointments, accusations and controversies, ill health and months in hospital, all such a vivid kaleidoscope of moments, events, images.. simply unbelievable and unimaginable….

Thank you producers and directors, colleagues and friends, workers and technicians for all that you did in making it possible for me to be here today. But… most importantly… you the fans and well wishers and friends… thank you for continuously being supportive and strong with me throughout this long and tenuous journey. You made me what I am and shall continue to make me every day that I endeavor to live up to your expectations.

Coming back home is pleasurable. But miss the presence of Abhishek, who as I write has just landed in New York for the screening of ‘Delhi 6′. He has been on a long non stop flight and has to drive straight for the show, but thanks to the modernization of facilities on aircrafts these days, he was able to text me from the air at 38,414 feet to say he had his first mid air shower !! Emirates does carry a wonderful reputation of excellence in the air !!

The drive from KK to Trivandrum was peaceful and without blemish and the flight though a bit rough – the heat causing thermals to rise steeply to some turbulence – was pleasant. Shanuk, looked odd and puzzled -

“Didn’t you just come back a few days ago from… and now you’re back again.. oh..  ok..”, is what I guess he muttered as he vigorously shook his long tail and cocked his ears and head to one end.

It was Sunday. And Sunday evening is ‘darshan’ at the gates of Jalsa. Hundreds of visitors and fans turn up by about 6 in the evening and I open the gates and go out and meet them. A practice that has not stopped from the 1982 accident on ‘Coolie’. Endearing and compassionate and so full of love. I wonder what I may have done to receive such adulation and with such consistency.

At the Award ceremony it was wonderful to see so many colleagues and familiar faces. If nothing else these occasions do bring the fraternity together in happiness and joy. Nari Hira, the owner of Stardust and many other prominent publications, has been a pioneer in many aspects of film journalism. We may not have agreed on several issues and we may have disconnected ourselves through the years, but I have to say he has remained a friend and a gentleman throughout. He told me he had seen ‘Lear’ twice over and could narrate every scene in the film and was happy that the jury chose to acknowledge a film that may not have been mainstream. Stardust has always rewarded areas that have been either ignored or not brought up for consideration, and that is what is different about them in comparison with some of the other ceremonies.

I must retire now to regain strength from the strain of KK. So its back to the gym and the diet and the ‘pranayaam’ in the morning..

Its going to get all rushed and busy again and I wonder if it shall affect the mind, still steeped in the peace and solitude of the three seas of Southern India.. We shall find out tomorrow…

Love as always and more..

The schedule has ended.. 4 days ahead ! This is unique. Production had planned timings keeping my restrictive working hours, but I went beyond my doctor’s brief and started at 5 am every morning, instead of my regulated 11 am. Sometimes there is benefit in accommodating a producers problem – you finish early and go home !!

The jetty at the Rock was our location today and as you stand there feeding your eyes with the enormity of both spirit and structure, you cannot help but feel so pygmy’d in the presence of such greatness in thought and volume.

So.. you venture across as the unit changes location. A motor passenger boat, loaded with life jackets, takes you across in minutes and some benevolent managers of the facility receive and guide you through.

It is a neat and well kept premise. I have found this to be a recurring culture in most important temples and places of worship in the South. There is deep reverence of course, but also a keen sense of discipline ; another key feature in this part of the world.

Just before the main ‘mandapam’ sheltering the statue of Vivekanand, is a smaller area which houses with some great preservation skills, the foot print of Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. An inscription on a black granite stone at the entrance relating how she came as an ordinary ‘kanya’ avatar to woo Shiva, leads us to an enclosed area where the foot print on the rock, now garlanded and further protected by a glass case on the floor, is seen.

A guide explains the story in detail. How she came, the conditions on the acceptance, the cock crowing three times, a defector imitating the sound to deflect her efforts, the marriage not fructifying… of Hanuman and his efforts to reach and save Sita across the sea to Lanka, of the medication He carried by lifting an entire mountain full of herbs on the instructions of Rama when Lakshman was injured in battle with Ravan, of Davadhar a block of mountain right in line with the footprint on the mainland ; it being a piece of the mountain that dropped accidentally from the larger piece being carried by Hanuman, Dava meaning medicine, hence the name DavaDhar…

The main sanctum of the Swami is more recent. The front is designed in Tamilian Temple architecture and the rear in the style of Bengali culture. Inside stands Vivekanand a metal version done by Ranade a committed Maharashtrian who was deeply influenced by the teachings of the Swami. Granite pillars in black contain ornate and intricate designing. The rear portion also carries positions of the sun during various stages of its journey across and the meditation room – dark, quiet with an illuminated ‘OM’ at the far end. I sit here for some time. It is peaceful. A few long haired individuals are there before me, in yogic posture. The smell of the incense stick is just enough to create a mild ambiance and softly the chant of ‘om’ through a recorded device brings on the solemn meditative atmosphere that the space requires..

image

Beside, on another adjoining rock, the Saint Thiruvalluvar, built even more recently at a commanding height of 133′. Made to this height because it took 133 pieces of the stone used, to build the image. When the Tsunami came the water was splashing at the Saints hands. People on the Rock got stranded. They climbed higher up nearer to the main mandapam. The water never reached them. No damage was caused to either structure.

Nature’s fury, respectful to the divine  !!

image

On the outskirts, two large man made cement reservoirs to contain the rain water, for general purpose usage ; the drinking water coming in by boats daily. The white that one observes on the rock from photographs is cement poured over. For what, I did not ask, nor was told why.

On leaving, just at the exit, large black granite slabs again, carrying names of institutions and individuals that made donations so these monuments could be constructed. Some other donors now give funds to a trust that runs various educational units throughout the country on the principles of Vivekanand. I take home some forms and shall be contributing to this noble cause. They generously told me they would carve my name on the slab to show their appreciation. I smile. Not so much in approval of the thought of seeing my name engraved for posterity, but more the thought of seeing the expressions of my grandchildren, Navya-Naveli and Agastya were they to visit here in the years to come -

“Hey ! Look ! Nana came here in 2009. That is so cool !”  Or whatever their vocabulary would be then.

It has been overwhelming to read all your responses to the last post and to the words that came out late in the night from my beleaguered mind. Many of you give me far greater credit than I deserve. Sometimes words just flow out involuntarily without reason. Many give better versions of the same thought. Many give Hindi translations. And it is such a great feeling of oneness. I do get attached and emotional on these issues and reiterate their value to me repeatedly on this forum. Maybe with some degree of monotony. So be it. If something touches me I want expressions and mediums to set them apace. This is where I find them and this is where I shall express them.

Aishwarya returns from the Berlin Film Festival after introducing PP2 and as she sets foot at home her husband sets off to the Big Apple again for the screening and premier of ‘Delhi 6′. Another whirl wind tour, taking him to Dubai next and then New Delhi where we shall all join him, hopefully, for the Indian Premier.

A news paper review of the music of ‘Delhi 6′, spoke glowingly of it. Though I wish to correct the columnist on one matter. He talks of the track “Genda Phool” on the CD and mentions the track starting with Afro Sounds before the music kicks in. Wrong. They are not Afro Sounds or vocals. They are the vocal sounds made by the keepers of doves in residences in most parts of North India and in Uttar Pradesh, particularly. Doves in their hundreds are housed as pets virtually and kept in sweetly designed cottages on the flat roofed terraces’ of these homes. Every morning they are released from their cages, free to fly and move about. When they have had enough the owners come on the roof and make these sounds that you hear in the recorded CD, to bring them, the doves, back home. AR Rehman has most creatively  used those authentic sounds and composed this extraordinary number, sung by the extraordinary Rekha Bharadwaj, wife of the extraordinary director Vishal Bharadwaj of Omkara fame, for the film. As you may have guessed by now after seeing some of the promos of ‘Delhi 6′, that the dove has a very significant and symbolic presence in the film. The number ‘Masakali’ on the disc which has become almost an anthem in the country due to its popularity, is in fact the name of the dove. It plays an important part in the romance between Sonam and Abhishek. So there !!

Vanakkam again … till the morrow !!

Amitabh Bachchan

ps: the last picture with a vast sea and a thin land mass jutting out, is indeed the final point or tip of mainland India. The larger encompassed area is the Devi Temple inside and beyond that  a smaller shelter is the exact spot where the land mass ends.

The water of life beckons me.

I reach my destination. My footprints follow behind. Soon to be engulfed in the flow. The waters wash away the desire and pain. I rest in the belief of fulfillment, giving myself to the elements. The foot prints of life now washed away, never to be seen again.

What is my life ?

That which surrounds me now or that which got washed away…

I am back !! The day is over. The sun has set somewhat hazily over the Arabian Sea. I have been thrust into the volcanic gravel by the coast and washed ashore by the gentle and at times harsh waters of the three seas. The wig and grisly beard has survived this entire onslaught and a quick change from the wet clothes has made me survive a severe cold. I am dry and rested, fed and ready for slumber. All that remains for the day is being punched out now over a typing pad – a most enjoyable and intimate obsession !

‘enjoyable and intimate obsession’… just heard Abhishek say that over the interview on NDTV which he did for a ‘DELHI 6′ promotion in New York, as he describes my attachment to blogging.

Yes, I get restless when I cannot devote sufficient time to Extended Family (EF). Anxious when I am unable to gather the stuff I want to put across to all of them and irritable when after having gone through the relevant technology in writing the post, it all disappears because I was unable to follow simple corrective advice on how to avoid such catastrophes.

It has been a long and exciting 295 posts. And despite the harsh cynical opinions carried by many over the durability and the authenticity of this connection, we are still here and flourishing -

… तू न थमे  गा कभी , तू न मुड़े गा कभी , तू न झुके गा कभी ..

राह पकड़ तू एक चला चल , पा जाएगा मधुशाला

Thank you my dear ones for the strength of your convictions and faith. I wish that this holding of hands shall be eternal and strong.

Frequent retakes of one particular section of the scene, where, in a state of extreme condition, I had to fall flat on my stomach, got me hot headed momentarily. I do not think the director realized my delicate condition as far as my stomach is concerned. It has been slit open 3 times, with gashes that consume most of the length of my belly. Other extraneous devices which have been deployed from one hospital episode to another, have left my midriff resemble a mini golf course with the entire 18 holes visible in close proximity. Any impact on it is, apart from being extremely painful, most dangerous in terms of the trauma that it has to take, either through rough falls or misguided punches in an action sequence. I have been advised care from my doctors on it. But putting me through the grind, not because of any error on my part, take after take, because miles away in the background a flag did not blow in the right direction, is hard on the actor.

But we bear it with a smile as part of our routine and move on. Move on to the next shot which gets you crawling upon the rocks and welcoming the wave upon wave of water and sand, that now engulfs every corner and crevice of your body. Wet and drenched to the skin, sand filled, make-up blood streaming down your face into the eyes and mouth and floating in ecstasy at the brim of lashing waves, muttering thank fulness for having put me in such condition, is what a day in the life of an actor is all about.

And as you drag your weighted body now from the scene, after a final ok, towards your vanity van to rid yourself first of the damaged body and extraneous hair, comes a screaming call from fan for autograph and photograph. There is sand and salted sea water in your eyes, in your mouth in every portion of your dress, but oblige you must at this juncture or else…

“.. he’s just such an arrogant and ill mannered !?*##!** ! we are the ones that make him and is this the way to treat your fans.. well to hell with you Mr B, or whatever you call yourself. You’re just too big for your boots ! #!!*?*## you !!…

Ah ! the vagaries of this profession !

But away from all this and in a moment of solitude and peace, I take some more photographs. I am attracted to one particular rock by the shore. To me it resembles the deity Hanuman lying face up on his back on the sea. I doubt if others notice it. I dare not ask or tell them of my discovery for fear of being laughed at. But it is there in the pictures I post to EF and wonder if those that are close to such divinity in belief, would acknowledge what I see, or is it an illusion of a mad decrepit old man.

In the Ramayan, this location is of eminence. It is here that the Ram Setu exists. When Ram reached the edge of the land, unable to travel across to Lanka, where Ravan had kept his wife Sita as a kidnapped hostage, to rescue her, he had touched the rocks with his divine hands and formed a bridge of floating rocks so that his army of Hanuman followers could cross over this large expanse of sea that separated the two mainlands.

Some time back there was great debate and argument over the existence of this mythical bridge, now not seen by the naked eye. But a satellite photograph of the region has clearly shown a submerged land mass under the sea, connecting the two worlds – India and Sri Lanka. Is this then confirmation of the bridge that Ram built ?

And a controversy now rages. The Government’s maritime administration now wishes to dredge this area to make it compatible for large container ships to sail through, thereby reducing distance of travel from one east   coast to the other west, or even of vessels that come and go to the far east past India and Sri Lanka.

The dredging would destroy the submerged land mass as visible through the satellite photographs. This is unacceptable to the religious bodies, who see it as a desecration of their religious sanctity. The matter now rests in uncertainty. Politics and politicians having moved in too on the subject.

But back to my photographs now, to draw your attention to what seems to me to be a definite figure that forms in the rocks. Am I being delusional ? Or is this a hereditary trait ? I have spoken at length when describing similar activities that my Father pursued ; of finding an image in rocks, bringing them home and with a short flash of a paint brush, bringing out a figure of some distinction and form. Could I be, then, the recipient of some minuscule traits of my Father ?

The above two I took with two different cameras. the lower one is a more refined lens and from a more refined make. Strange how the making of a particular quality of lens can create a world of a difference !!

Vanakkam  !!

The South Indian ethos for welcome and greeting.

And presenting to you the early morning vista of the Vivekananda Rock and the grand statue of Swami Thiruvalluvar. This is around 8 in the morning. I got closer to it, through narrow by-lanes, full of multiple curio shops and object des arts.

…  and I am back in the room, having started at 5 am and driven some kilometers to the location, wigged and bearded and finished work for the early part of the day. Quick, efficient, punctual, well planned… work eases out smoothly.

We wait for the sun to gain some strength and to get back again to yesterday’s location, by the water. Wig and beard is off so I can feed myself. With it on is a process if you want to consume food. Make up department admonishes you, because jaw movements undo the glue that is used to stick beard. That would not be a pretty sight in the shot to observe. Here a minute ago, gone now !!

I shall utilize this time to write to EF of course but also to put my mind together to write the forward to my Father’s ‘Madhushala’ – a fresh elegant large coffee table sized version, having the original verses accompanied by the English translation by Marjorie Boulton of the Oxford University and decorated by paintings done on the subject by my niece Namrata Bachchan. The proof is looking very good. The paintings are unique and hopefully with the written forward should form a fitting tribute to my Father’s 101 st anniversary.

Namrata, as I have said earlier is a poet and has written and published some of her works. She also studied art at University in the United States and has done some very different and exciting art work during the years after coming out from the US.

But what a task for me to put down my impressions on my Father. It’s almost sounding impertinent that I be given this responsibility, but everyone insists I should do it. And so I shall, irrespective of how daunting it would be. Have many son’s have written forwards to their Father’s works  ???

I shall pray and hope for some inspiration from the sublime serenity of my present location !!

Give me the strength dear Lord to accomplish this mission with fortitude and grace. With the tenacity and wisdom that this great and inspirational writing so richly deserves. May I in my most limited and illiterate thought be able to bring across the depth and true value, so justifiably essential for this masterpiece. And may it be worthy of an acknowledgement  from the heavens where my Father now resides.

More later..

Sir,

I am regular visitor to the blog, though just like to read the posts. I also admire the the fact that the errors are acknowledged and rectified.

In this context, I would like to clarify about the gigantic black statue in the foreground of Vivekananda Rock Memorial. Is this the one, you thought to be of Mahakavi Bharathiar? If so, I would like to inform that it is Saint Thiruvalluvar, the writer of Thirukkural and not Bharathi. If it is not that statue, which you mentioned of, I am sorry.

I hope the erratum, if necessary would be included.

Regards,

Kanya Kumari !! Above ! In all its beauty. In all its pristine quality. In all its manifestations at the hands of civilization. The imagery, is at the hotel. Murals that adorn several walls and on the lawns of this picturesque locale.

Th bare rocks scattering into the sea, with the sun emerging out of the clouds is where we shoot. A tall thin image of the Virgin Mary can be seen in isolation on one of the rocks, distantly. On another image is the gigantic monument of a figure in dark stone. This is the statue of the famous and renowned poet thinker and patriot Bharathi. Just behind which is visible a structure. This is the Vivekananda Rock, where the great philosopher sat and meditated. Further to the left and hidden behind foliage is a mosque. Such a wonderful amalgamation and integration of all the religions. A symbol of our secular constitution.

The area around the edge of the mainland, where the Rock stands is now crowded with commerce. Shops and advertisements and conveniences for the tourist or visitor. One wishes it could have been left in its original striking form. But I guess civilization has its needs and these get incorporated. Its no different in any other part of the world. Whether in Italy or in France, the same atmosphere exists around some of the most prominent marvels of the world.

The sun played hooky with us during the afternoon. Kept getting behind clouds and causing the DOP to stop shooting procedures because the light would not match the previous days work. We finished early, but it gave me an opportunity to pull out a more civilized camera to capture for posterity and EF the beauty of the place.

There were some wonderful tools in iPhoto to enhance the pictures. So I went there and did a bit of jiggery-pokery to make the snaps a bit more attractive. Only the very best for all of you.. isn’t it ??

I shall retire now.. for tomorrow beckons me early.. till then..

Up at 5 am and down on location at 6 am and bearded and wigged at 7 am and watching this wondrous and intriguing site by 7:01 am. Hundreds and hundreds of windmills to capture the strong breeze in the region and convert it to run the turbines or whatever they turn, to generate  electricity…

Amazing !! The hills in the background of an early morning hue and to the other side, just meters away the end of the land sloping into the sea..

These windmills, far from the more romantic ones that abound in Holland and around which many tales bristle with, fairly tales that one came across and read in the early years of school, now swing tales of progress and development, of investment and savings. If you finance one such, the Government gives you tax benefits. Or so, a few suited gentlemen informed me  when they came to sell the idea to me. There is a region near Nashik, a prominent city north of Mumbai, a city where I had during the shoot of same film, posted some earlier posts, which has strong winds that blow through the dry  and dust laden hills around, that is in desperate need to put these massive structures up. Fascinating !! Had seen similar pillars in Jaisalmer in Rajasthan in the middle of the desert. Imposing and productive.

The organisation TERI that I support and work for has researched that over 3 million villages world wide still do not have electricity and that over a million of them are in India. Dr Pachauri, Nobel winner for the group that worked on environment and us have been closely associated with his programme. The effort is to use solar energy in generating electricity. The Unforgettable Tour worked in conjunction with them, in bringing electricity to at least a hundred villages. The rest of the Tour programme shall continue to devote substantial interest in furthering that cause. There are many instances where causes worked on, become common for other charitable institutions. Like I support a school in Aurangabad for the mentally challenged. A few of us, which includes a Deputy Commissioner of Police and some other Government servants in Administration and the singer Jagjit Singh have contributed towards the school structure, now in its new surroundings since the number of students has gone up and which lies in an area that has a shortage of electricity. So, working in regions for the procuring of power makes sense, since it also jointly then, helps the power needed for the school.

It is interesting how a co relationship begins to exist once work is started in a particular direction.

Jaya and I work along with the organisation, an NGO, Yuvak Biradari. Several activities of the YB get co related. For example. We work in generating electrical power in areas that do not have it. Then after it is provided we encourage children to get educated and study through the schools that we build and once they mature from the education they give time and energy to working in areas, voluntarily, that may need assistance in times of disaster. We subscribed say to YB at the time of the Latur earthquake that devastated the entire city in Maharashtra. And we adopted a village for a month, feeding and clothing them till they were able to stand on their own. Our committed workers, a produce of the many educational institutions we support, then go out and work at these sites. Just as they did during the time of the Mumbai terror attacks and a little while ago during the Bihar floods.

It is gratifying. And somewhere so fulfilling.

The sun gets strong. It burns the skin and has hastened our departure from the location – the graveled road that you prominently see in the photograph. We shall break till around 4 pm. Then back to the final beach and into the water – beard, wig, clothes and all, shivering through every retake that the camera commands..

There’s no business like show business !!

Love you and more later..

My server and BigAdda educate me on the new additions on the blog for the benefit of those of the EF. And I feel duty bound to pass them on to you, in order that the working is explained. Here it is -

Now your EF can filterout comments with your replies.
eg. if I have commented on DAY 286, and if you have also replied to my comment…
If I visit DAY 286 and click the ‘SHOW BIG B’s comment’ link it will show me, my comment and your reply to my comment… and 100s of other comments to which you have replied.

2. EF can now rate a particular comment.. can give thumbs up or thumbs down to any comment.

3. Any one can filter comments as per user names…
eg. I can visit DAY 286 and filter out all comments made by a user called ‘Dinesh’

4. There is a link ‘Click to see activities’ right next to the name of EF members…
if I click this link, it will pull out all comments made by that person across your various posts.

Hopefully this shall increase interactivity among the EF..

Went into the waters of the 3 water masses as part of my act in the film. Exhilarating ! It came about late afternoon on a day that began at 6 am. Streets and little road crossings, eating places and isolated roads formed most of the early morning. There were hardly any watchers or crowds, which was good for filming. But I can imagine the place were Rajnikant to be here instead of me…!!! There was a welcome break of almost 4 hours in between. The sun after 11 am burns your skin off. So everyone huddles away for a quick siesta and lunch and then back to beard and wig and desperate walking..

And back after a day’s work I rummage through my Father’s autobiography and come across quite randomly this -

जहाँ कहीं भी गया कहानी मेरे साथ गई , नहीं ये कोई बात नई

Wherever I went a story went along with me, this is not something that is unknown or new..

And I think this to be not just true for my Father but for his son as well. So living with stories made by media is generational. That’s somewhat reassuring ! Ha !

My ever flowing sms quotes, coming to me in droves drives me to share some with you -

“Knowledge speaks. Wisdom listens.”

“Luck has a peculiar habit of favoring those that don’t depend on it.”

“Give a thousand chances to your enemy to become your friend. But don’t give a single chance to your friend to become your enemy.”

“If Bill Gates stops his business and starts spending his money at Rs 1 crore per day, he can spend it for about 725 years. Crazy fellow. Still working !!”

“No one can make us feel inferior without our consent.”

I liked the last the best. It was strong and self respecting and had great attitude. It was principled and honorable.

You cannot insult me with inferiority unless I allow you to. Why must I feel inferior to anyone. Unless I succumb to the fact that I am inferior, you will not be able to insult me.

Beautiful thought.

It challenges one in a way. It tells us that we are indeed no less than any other unless we ourselves think that we are. It provokes us into believing that we must work towards making ourselves so accomplished that no other can stand before us with superiority. If I am weak and less competent and admit that I am, then any other will make us feel inferior. But if we are strong and capable and believe that we are, then we also believe that we are not inferior to any. Giving our consent weakens us. But if we have the strength of our conviction then we shall remain superior and without the fear of inferior accusation.

So make ourselves strong and resolute. Determined and conscious. We should be able to say ‘we can’, rather than say ‘we may be able to’ or ‘perhaps we can’. There should be no room for doubt and uncertainty.

I like that. And I must start believing in that too. Words are easy to write and express. performing the deed is where the problem comes in.

I learn this from inputs that come from EF. Many of you give such wise and meaningful ideas and suggestions. You are all so blessed with the ability to be able to do that. I value that and am blessed that you associate with me.

I must to bed again for the early call. I must to read scripts to which I need to give consent. I must to think and consider all that I imbibe from my Fathers words. I must express gratitude to the Almighty that I am able to do that. Able to hear my Father virtually as I read him. To gather his wisdom and thought any time that I may want to, even in his absence.

I cherish these moments the most. His voice resounds. He is there in front of me by my side talking animatedly. And I listen. And smile. And nod in great approval.

Should India embrace Slumdog Millionaire?

With sensationalism, stereotypes, and a shallow emotionally manipulative narrative, Slumdog Millionaire uses all the tricks in the bollywood book.
What’s not to like?
It is a combination of the age old hindi masala movie formula, and could in fact be a true triumph of a bollywood style film…except for the fact that its made by westerner and will be viewed on a Hollywood platform.

So what sets it apart?
Is it the plotline?
The tale of orphaned children on the streets of Mumbai, growing up and torn apart in the worst of circumstances, is nothing new to the Indian cinema. With movies like – Deewar, Muqaddar ka Siqandar, Agneepath, Parinda, the age old plot of murdered parents, thief turned gangster siblings, sisters or girlfriends forced into prostitutions, threatening gangsters, a rags to riches hero, triumph of love and good over evil has been used in hindi movies ad-nauseum.
In fact this storyline has been used and abused by bollywood so often and for so long that if used in any other film it would now panned by critics and audiences alike as typical unoriginal masala fare.

Is it the exploration of the Mumbai underbelly?
Slumdog does delve into the underbelly of Mumbai, but only superficially and deliberately for the outrage effect. The Mumbai underground has been captured effectively and more deeply in films like Satya, Salaam Bombay, Company and Dharavi. And the stark visuals of poverty, life in the slums, gangster lairs seen often in reality and in our films hold no novelty for us.

Alright really…so why should India embrace Slumdog Millionaire?
Is it for the new Indian stereotypes that it enforces, thereby advancing India from a land of the gurus, snake charmers and elephants to a land of call centers, slums and beggars.
Maybe we should appreciate the sensationalizing focus on the garbage piles or the human excreta, or be heartened by the calculated usage of Bombay Riots as the backdrop of the mother’s death, or be intrigued by the random swindling of Tourists on the streets of India or maybe amused by the unnecessary usage of a call center as the only depiction of corporate India.

Interestingly, the original storyline of the book Q & A, through still filmy, had less of the designed perpetual devastation. Here the lead protagonist is found as a baby in the clothes donation box of a Delhi church, brought up by a priest, given the name Ram Mohammed Thomas. Has no clear religion, no mother to die in the Bombay riots, no brother turned gangster or girlfriend turned prostitute to be separated from.

So it seems that Danny Boyle has picked up and glorified every stereotype about India, sensationalized it and packaged it in a film being now hailed as a tribute to Mumbai. Thus on the world platform, the true hero and the winner of all the awards for Slumdog is the city of Mumbai, which for the western audience contains all the shock value required to set it apart from the clutter.

But in India, Slumdog Millionaire if embraced, can only be a triumph of a hypocrisy that showers accolades on a film about Mumbai, that lacks its soul, typecasts its people and uses its style of film making to emotionally tantalize the western audience.

Kanya Kumari… a word, a location one has been hearing since geography and nation and country started making sense. Now after 67 years of my existence finally to be here – a region of my own country, never visited before.

The flight in was a bit delayed but comfortable. The visage below was exciting. As has always been every time one crosses destinations over Bharat Mata. Landscape getting greener and after a while the majestic mountains – the Nilgiris. ‘Nil’ being blue, ‘giri’ mountain..Nilgiri..blue mountains. And they actually look blue as you fly 37,000 ft above them. Its not the reflection of the clear blue sky. They are blue in color. Lovely, serene and beautiful. And within a short time, the long stretch of the coastline of Kerala weaves about underneath and as we come in on an approach, the millions of palm and banana trees, the sea, the back waters… and touch down !!

Kerala.. the most literate state in the country. Picturesque and serene ambiance. Tourist friendly. Some of who,or some of which, whatever, occupy seats behind me in the aircraft and in front of me in the bus to the terminal, taking videos and snaps of dark-glassed, white goated AB !! Guess they thought I must be some celebrity. A few passengers in the plane had left their seats and come for autographs, as had the Captain and Ist Officer from the cockpit and they probably observed that.

The drive was long. 3 hrs. Traveling through Kerala, entering Tamilnadu and on to Kanya Kumari. There is no particular signage as you leave one state and enter the other. Or maybe there is. Could have slipped by as I dozed off. I drew my assumptions from the political party banners that gradually changed en route. The red hammer and sickle of the Communist party CPI(M) in power in one to the yellow and black and rising sun of the DMK in the other.

Went straight to the location and bearded and wigged up in a jiffy, as can be most vividly seen in accompanying photograph for your benefit and on to a bridge, where I walk through in some distress and pain. Evident..??

The bridge has a history. It is temporary. Made of rough make shift iron, because.. this is the spot where the Tsunami hit the coast some years ago and caused destruction. In one of the snaps behind me can be seen some concrete. A road like concrete going into the water. That is one quarter of the actual bridge that was swept away by this giant wave . In another photograph to my right in the water can be seen a loop like structure. That is the other section of the massive bridge that was washed away. Every other construction around this tiny fishing village was devastated. Except… that church in the background behind which the sun sets. That celestial edifice withstood the waters !!

In one of the photographs there is the visual of the sea, a few stone banks and some boats in the fore ground. Well.. that is where the Tsunami came in from and wrecked the area with a savaging, ferocious intensity.

The village has been renamed since as the Tsunami Village.

I am now in my room, quietly overlooking the end of the mainland into the vast Indian Ocean. In fact.. the point where three water masses meet –  the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean; a minute or two away from the historic Vivekananda Rock – a symbol of the great religious philosopher that trod this land and influenced millions with his teachings..

Back to bed now.. have to be bearded by 6 am !!

And oh.. India just beat SriLanka in the final of the tour in the T20. They are playing just across the waters virtually, on the Emerald Isle. A remarkable miraculous win. India, down and out during most of the game until the final moment, when the two Pathan brothers, Irfan and Yousuf smashed the ball all over the park and gave us victory !! Yipee !! I sleep well tonight !

Vanakkam !!

Day 291

Kanya Kumari, India                    February 10, 2009/ written for February 9, 2009           8:00 pm

The 9th was spent in recovering from the jet lag and catching up on the mountains and mountains of paper work stacked up.. in office, at home.. every where.. and.. a million meetings..

Meetings with Producers on set and off set and about to go on set films. Meetings to discuss creatives for the next commercial to be shot for a brand I endorse. Meetings with bigAdda to finalize how to make additions to the blog, to make it more user friendly. This was most interesting.

So… a few things to share.

There had been a huge revolution among the EF on the matter of finding the reply to their comment in an easier fashion. Well, that has now been initiated and up. I am certain many will now be able to get to know through simple technology, when they have received a reply from me.

The other extensive discussion had was on the translation of the blog in several languages of the nation. This took a while. Several interesting points on its functioning and also in its execution were put up and finally concluded. I believe.. and this is just I believe.. that by the 25th or so, the facility should be in operation.

Now… there is a small working snag on this. Most of my writing takes place in the late hours or very late hours. This timing is inconvenient for the translators to work on. So… they will be given 24 hrs to attend to the content before it can be put up. Therefore.. blog of DAY xyz would be in position to read in Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Hindi, Bengali etc ONLY 24 hrs LATER or on DAY xyz(i).. we are working on that and should have a final methodology in place soon.

There is also a lot more being designed for the blog, but perhaps a bit too early to discuss right now.. so we wait.

But it is all very exciting stuff. At least I think so, and hope you do too.

All this while, Abhishek was busy in another part of the office with promotional interviews for DELHI 6 and as soon as that was over we went across to Yash Raj Studio to see ‘Luck By Chance’. Farhan and Ritesh the Producers of the film had been calling Abhishek to come and see it and so we did. Abhishek is working with them in their Production with Abhinav Deo directing. Abhinav is a fresh and young and very dynamic talent. He comes from the Advertising world and from some of the work that he has done, most recently he did one for NIKE, which was sensational ! Also… and this confirms what a small world we live in, he is the son of Ramesh and Seema Deo, who played that wonderful couple in ANAND, with Rajesh Khanna and myself in it, directed by Hrishi Da. Placed them..? Good. He has a brother who is a prominent actor in the Marathi cinema and recently made a very successful film for which I did  the voice over in the shape of a commentary…

‘LBC’ was innovative and fresh. Zoya, Farhan’s sister directed it. Its a take on the Hindi Film Industry. The story revolves around a young actor seeking a place in it. Some very relaxed and effortless performances. And all full of young and new talent doing marvelous work. Though I must say Rishi Kapoor, Dimple and some character actors of yore were brilliant.

Some smart trailers were shown before the film started and I could not but marvel at the qualitative change in the making of this generations creativity. Stunning absolutely. And all this coming soon after I had mentioned yesterday on the joy of seeing the young taking bold and definitive strides..

We kept up late discussing the film.. and waiting for Jaya to land back from London.. and to continue with our discussions..

Sleep took over.. there was the travel the next day to prepare for.. and so to bed..

My love

Day 290

Prateeksha, Mumbai                            February 8, 2009                        11:08 pm

HOME !!!

‘Jaan bachi toh lakhon paye, ghar ke buddhu laut ke aaye’

It is a feeling that is unmatched – the feeling of coming home. We could be in the most beautiful locations, among the most desirable living conditions, but home is home and nothing can ever replace it. The familiar faces, the smell, the feel, the order of things, the disorder of things and of course Shanuk, the pet !!

The bright warm sun was most welcoming as I sat basking in its heat after the intense cold, catching up with the paper work of the past so many days. The jet lag hitting a little later got me into bed for a nap after a fairly consummate helping of home cooked food. Good ol’ vegetarian dal, aloo and bhindi. Hadn’t seen all of them for a while. Could sense a grudge as they were being devoured sumptuously..grudge from the aloo, dal.. not me !! Ha !

Your responses are warm and concerned and alluring. I understand your words and your feelings. But I am human and do get into a rushed reaction at times. What disturbed me was the insensitivity towards someone’s Mother. That was intolerable. But it has passed and in good measure …

Abhishek and me came back. Jaya stayed on to be with Aishwarya before she resumes her promotional tour through Paris, Madrid and Berlin for Pink Panther 2. Abhishek will get into promotionals for ‘Delhi 6′ and I shall be heading for the southern most tip of mainland India – Kanya Kumari. Respondent that corrected me in that, do please note the mention of ‘mainland’. The southern most point of India is at the Nicobar Island in the Bay of Bengal and yes this was, as rightly pointed out by respondent a question in KBC, when I was hosting it.

See.. I note things and read the comments and correct myself when wrong.. and a round of applause would not be out of place here.. thank you very much EF !!

Did an interview for DNA, a few days back on the move and it got printed today. So just thought I would let you in on that -

Sir,

here are the questions i would like to ask you regarding the coveted Crystal awards that you recieved on saturday…

1. How was the experience?

ANS//
This was my very visit to Davos and the World Economic Forum. One had heard of the prestige and importance attached to this international forum, but being invited there and to be honoured by their organisation for the prestigious Crystal Award was most humbling.
Davos is a picturesque quaint little town up in the mountains of Switzerland and before WEF came about, may perhaps have been better known for its proximity to the renowned ski resort of Klosters.
The concept of bringing so many important dignitaries from the world of politics and business together at one location and involving them in discussion and comment on world affairs, is indeed most laudable. To debate on conditions past present and future, to share their views in order that the world may be a better place, all bodes very well. In one week, to have the concentrated brain and thinking power of those that matter in the universe is an extremely well designed event.
At a forum such as this, for them to honour an actor from the Indian Film Industry speaks volumes on the importance and relevance they give to my fraternity and to my country. I felt great pride in being a part of WEF, in accepting their recognition to me and most importantly in being an Indian.

2. Did you get to interact with Jet Li? If yes, how was the experience?

ANS//
Yes I did, although very briefly. He seemed a very humble and down to earth individual. His passion for the Foundation he has founded for the benefit of those in need is most laudatory. In his talks, he gave the horrifying experience of him and his family’s moment in the Maldives during the time of the Tsunami, where clutching his child he had to cling on to a tree to save himself. It was that moment that formed the inspiration of giving back to humanity. For someone who came from very humble and modest beginnings he has made remarkable achievements. His power of communication despite his language barrier is astonishing. He believes in Buddha and the inner strength it gives him in doing so. He gave me his visiting card when we left, which I thought was extremely sweet. I mean, how many celebrities in the world of his standing, carry visiting cards !!

3. We hear you spoke about how art serves as a medium for better global understanding. If you could share a few of those thoughts with us…

ANS//
To me Cinema has always been, apart from its entertainment value, a medium of great integration. When we enter the darkened hall of a theatre we never ask whether the person sitting next to me is a Hindu or a Muslim, or Sikh or Christian. We are never concerned with the colour of his or her skin. Of being black or white or brown. We watch before us the unfolding of a story, where we laugh together at the jokes, sing their songs together, cry together at the same emotions. There are sadly very few institutions left in this world that can propagate the values of such an event. In a world filling rapidly with hate and violence, perhaps this is one medium that prides itself in bringing together, in integrating people rather than dividing them. The popularity of Indian Cinema within our shores and now increasingly outside, is not just the stars and their physical attraction, is not just the song and dance, is not just the escapist nature of our stories, but the fact that it brings us poetic justice within 3 hours. Poetic justice for most of us, does not come  within a lifetime, sometimes several lifetimes. What better example of global understanding can there be, in these strained and uncertain times.

4. Sir, since its Abhishek’s birthday tomorrow, thought would add one or two more questions….What are your wishes for your son on this special day…and what do you think should be his goal for the year?

ANS//
What do you think a father can wish for his son or daughter ? Happiness, fulfillment, joy, good health and goodness always. I would never like to set goals for another individual. Firstly because I do not have the understanding and acumen of doing so and secondly, I think it would rob from the person his or her individual initiative in setting and achieving his own goals. If I were to set goals for someone else they would contain some of my elements. They would dilute the effort and success of achievement from one that were to set his own. I wish him well and wish him the strength to discover and set his own goals and the ability to achieve them.

5. What are your personal goals and dreams for the year?

ANS//
To be alive !

Warm regards,

Thank you,
Amitabh Bachchan

Some interesting meetings took place today and it would be premature to speak of them yet, but it is very rewarding to note the changes that are taking place in the fraternity and in the medium. There is a greater sense of wanting to achieve more, to expand to reach out. There is huge interest from the International community. Of realizing the potential and the existent talent in this country, hitherto untapped. Somewhere, earlier in my blogosphere there was mention by me on the reason for this being, the opening up of the economy. On the world looking at India as a whole in different light. Recently too I put it up on a post that unfortunately, got renown for all the wrong reasons – the SlumDog controversy. Pity that the pertinent issue in that post was relegated to a dark background and a mutilated completely out of context matter, was thrown up as a denigrating headline for the sake of good copy by the media.

These are revealing times. The region of our habitat is in a focus never experienced before and no matter what the circumstances of the rest of the world may dictate, the process will not stop. With it, will come greater awareness and progress and development. That cynical myopic view shall be replaced with a certain desire to excel and envelope all that predominates. In all the walks in all directions. And I want to be 20 years younger to be able to witness at length all that unfolds. That was metaphorical. But in reality I feel for the new generation with great expectation and hope and the possibilities that will manifest themselves in the years to come.

Each generation since the birth of time has had similar feeling. But somehow, this generation or the one to come shall experience it faster and quicker. I feel the restlessness in the youth today, coming not from unfulfilled desire or frustration, but from wanting to acquire and gain more. Not materialistic gain. But one of searching for the better solution.

I am enamored by them. And I anxiously await the discoveries that they shall aspire to make. I want to be a part of it. To feel, to touch, to embody all that they bring forth. I lament the possibility of me not being able to be a participant in this glorious adventure. But I try to be awake and fertile to the offerings that may come my way.

It is so in my career. I am at a stage where many suggest and implore that I stop and rest. But how does one do that ? How can you be seeing the sun rise every morning in all its glory and think, or be asked to think, that it is setting ??

Remain with me.. EF.. in every morning of sunrise  !!

My love,

Amitabh Bachchan

Day 288

New York, NY USA              February 6, 2009/ written for February 5, 2009          9:35 am

Ladies and Gentlemen, friends and well wishers, happy and beautiful people, loving and adoring EF..

Apologies for the cryptic post last night. There was just so much jet lag in the system that it refused to allow me the liberty of voluntarily keeping my ophthalmic virtues in functional mode. These virtues are immensely vital to assuage many functions of the humanoid – most essential of which being the art of vision, given to us by the grace of birth by the manufacturers ‘upstairs’.  They go by different brand names, the manufacturers. They are involved in processes which remain common to all and often remembered throughout the day in varied and diverse structured residences ; most often in times of stress and trouble, well almost always in times of stress and trouble. And despite the gloom of economic recession world wide, there is none of that whatsoever ‘up there’. Its business as usual ! So help me God !!

Abhishek’s 33rd on the morning of the 5th was brought in with a quietude and an affection of simplicity. The four of us – Jaya, Abhishek, Aishwarya and myself gathered together in my room and just held each other in silence and thankfulness to the Almighty.

Most thoughtfully, Jaya had brought along a few essentials for a small ‘puja’ – the customary SatyaNarayan Paath that we indulge in on most auspicious occasions in the house, the recitation of which accompanied by a small prayer giving the early morning New York bitter cold a homely warmth.

Jaya nostalgically remembered the moments of Abhishek’s coming – the delivery, the Hospital, the excitement and his early baby years – over breakfast. And then we stepped out into the fresh cold breeze of minus temperatures.

Most of the day remained in togetherness. Shopping little odds and ends, sitting by a wayside eatery with some hot tea and coffee watching the city flow by ending up with some very dear friends for dinner at a cozy small corner Italian restaurant. It had not more than 15 tables and could handle perhaps 30-40 people at capacity. The atmosphere was calm and sober and polite and casually dressy. We caught up with our friends and gradually observed the place getting patronized by others that kept coming in in a gentle trickle.

As time passed by the voice levels gradually increased, the music on the speaker system, gentle and lounge till now switched to dance. The trickle became a flood at the entrance and before long the place was a screaming whooping up wild and amateur dancing at the table, club. A table by the side had an engagement couple entertaining a whole host of invitees. The familiar yelp of ‘odododododododuuuuu’ when you run your fingers rapidly across the mouth as you scream engulfed not just the room but the room two blocks down the street. Persian or Iranian favorites took over on the audio from American Dance Bar and those not attached to engaged couple, moved in their seats and respective tables adding to the gaiety of the lot that had witnessed the exchange of rings nearby. The place was now a bustling, noise filled, shouting across to your neighbor to be heard, music and dance jamboree… And the doors to the entrance just never stopped opening and closing, causing much consternation to the inmates because of the minus breezes they were inviting inside !!

One of the guests’ chair got pushed by incoming masses wanting to pass by. Her face almost hit her pasta involuntarily. She a small built hot head took on the 6’5″ escort to the comely brunette that had executed the butt push. Apologies and calmed tempers later a loud scream and ….

OMG !! OMG !!! OOOMMMGGGGOD !!

A lady, on distant table comes running up and just keeps screaming and jumping.. I’ve seen all your films, I am a huge fan, please, please Cheeni Kum, Cheeni Kum, Kabhi Al.. Kabhi Khush… OMG ! OMG !

She is white American of Spanish descent !

I acknowledge with a smile, a bit embarrassed at this exuberance in the middle of all the other commotion. Mobile photographs and flashes follow. Her gaze so far transfixed on AB sr and her other friends on her table full of a mix of local NewYorkers and Spanish, now swivels to AB jr and Aishwarya and she almost drowns the Persian music and dance in the other corner with her enthusiasm. Suddenly our table has now become the centre of this great celebrity attention locale. The owner shows up and greets us pleasantly amongst bobbing heads and extra chairs being moved above them. The waiters have a smile and are willing to listen to every time a finger of attention is raised. Heads are turning in conversation directed to us. The women look at Abhishek, the men at Aishwarya. Smiles and nods of approval rapidly distracting them from their drinks and fetuchini , or however else you pronounce and spell the delicacy. Hoardes of the rest of the restaurant now wanting to be photographed. There is now just no end to the sight unfolding. Fresh gusts of minus wind chill welcoming fresh guests, causing extreme traffic jams in over crowded joyous boisterous venue, music blaring pitch now, Persian has given way to nostalgia, Beatles abound, loud known lyrics being belted out from excessive whine infected larynx… joy, noise, happiness abound…

My guest Joe turns to me with an expression of bewilderment – “Would you ever imagine that America is going through its worst recession as you see this..?”

I do not react. I become still and look out of the glass enclosures. A little incident earlier in the day comes hurtling back to me.

Abhishek and I had been to a store to pick up some clothes. Purchase over, bills paid we move out and say our pleasantries to the staff that attended on us. A young lad from Equador had been of assistance in the store. He takes Abhishek aside -

“I heard your Dad say it was your birthday today !”

Abhishek nods in affirmation.

A gentle almost sympathetic smile appears on his face – “Its my Mother’s birthday today too”, he whispers. “I wanted to celebrate the day for her, but we decided we couldn’t because there was no money in the house due to the recession. From the goods you bought, I shall get a healthy commission today from the store. I just wanted to thank you for coming here. I can now take my Mother out and celebrate !”

He kept looking at us in silence. And then his eyes filled up and a tear sneaked out gently down his cheek.

Same World. Same Country. Same City. Same people.

Two different visuals. Life is so strange. And such a great leveler !

I am numbed into silence and into ending today of what I wanted o say..

Day 286

New York  NY, USA                                 February 4, 2009                           7:25 am

In the cold and the sleet of the blizzard we attended the premier of PP2. A fun occasion. Lots of fans and stars and people and pop corn and camaraderie and laughter and good wishes, ending up with dinner at an Indian Restaurant among friends.

Being with family was bliss and the warmth of that took care of all the cold that was enveloping us all around.

It was wonderful to watch from the side lines and not be a part of the attention. The media and the photographers and the interviews.

And this morning.. the sun shines brightly.

I am overwhelmed by the affection that all of you have shown to Abhishek for his birthday tomorrow and to the good wishes for Aishwarya. Thank you..

Some of you came on the blog to mention the meetings they had with us at the premier. That was sweet of you. Lovely to meet up with the perennial Rochelle who dutifully mingled with us in the crowds outside in the foyer.

This world is a small world, with large hearted people. Thank you for all your affection and love on the street as we left in our cars away from the premier. For those kind words of affection and love that drifted across from the barriers, from those that came up for autographs, from those that wanted personal photographs.. so so endearing…

I took some more snaps. Aishwarya at the premier and the park in the early morning light. All if you please from my mobile phone !! But as soon as I get back to India I shall be working in Kanya Kumari, the Southern most tip of India for ‘Johhny Mastana’ and I hope to carry my camera there to take proper photographs. Apparently the sun sets there are amazing..

Oh ! And in the field of sport… India thrashes Sri Lanka in the cricket.. Sehwag and Yuvraj play astonishing centuries.. Mahesh Bhupati and Sania come out victorious champs in the mixed doubles title at the Australian Open, as does Yuki in the Juniors Australian Open title… this is incredible !! GO INDIA !

My love for you as ever…

And in closing for the moment, I have to say this. In the past fortnight, I have been traveling somewhat extensively. Continents, countryies, cities, airports, roads…

And.. at every location there has been a steady flow of fans and people who have admired my work and come up and talk to me. Be it the highway to Pune, or the remote College campus in its surrounding hills. Be it the extremes of Davos or the air port lounges of Zurich, London and New York. Be it the queues boarding aircraft or the transit buses that carry you to them. Be it the lobbies of Hotels or the dining areas of restaurants or the casual visitor on the pavements as we walk.. there has never NOT been someone who has not mentioned OUR BLOG !!!

I say OUR.. because it has been possible to be this way only because of your continued support and reaction.

Thank you all that come to bigb.bigadda.. and may the fraternity grow even larger.

Hello again… !!

Just cannot seem to be away from EF for too long. Off to the premier of Pink Panther 2 at the Ziegfeld Theatre in Manhattan. Everyone dressing up, despite the blizzard conditions outside..

Lovely to be with Abhishek and Aishwarya and to be able to spend some time with them. Good we took the decision to come across here rather than head home. The expression on the photograph symbolizes the happiness I feel in the presence of loved ones. Its from the Jaipur Literary Festival, earlier.

Love as always….

Day 285

New York, NY, USA                      February 3, 2009                     3:45 pm

London – New YorkBA 1173 hrs to destination, some where over the Atlantic. Godthab in GreenLand to the right, St John’s Canada, to the left and a little further Montreal and lower down, New York, USA.

February 3, 2009 2:00 pm GMT, Tue 7:28 PM Mumbai, India

We had given up hope of being with Abhishek and Aishwarya in New York. The snow and excessive conditions over most of Britain yesterday brought our travel plans to a halt. The entire city of London and indeed most of the country had come to a standstill. Nothing moved – no traffic, no buses, no aircraft and hardly any people. Just the snow flakes. Drifting down almost involuntarily by the window to our room. Pretty. But kept us indoors.

The internet as a constant companion, the blog and respondents for company, Jaya and I sat through most of the day watching weather updates and films.

If today had not worked we would have headed back to Mumbai. But here we are another 2:30 hrs away from the ‘Apple’ and looking forward to meeting the kids.

The snow they say has never been so severe in Britain in the last 18 years. The Artic winds coming down from Russia has been the cause and they are likely to last some days. The TV keeps showing us visuals and interviews of people caught in the deluge ; journalists, the common man, travelers on the road. And it is fascinating to hear them. Fascinating, because they sound no different from the folks at home in India, when a heavy monsoon downpour has disrupted life in the city of Mumbai.

“There are many countries and cities in the World that experience much worse snow conditions and they are able to manage them well. But look at this. A few inches of white flakes and an entire London has come to a halt. What have the authorities been doing with all our Council taxes, if they cannot ….”

“This is England, the developed world, we’re supposed to have answers to conditions like this !”

Ha ! Sounds so familiar. Guess the world over it’s the same.

So Mumbaites.. do not despair, other parts of the world do not have answers to many of the woes that befall us and them. And yes, they all react in similar fashion.

The economic crisis looms large everywhere. It is shocking to see the show windows of all prominent stores displaying SALE signs and with percentages that range from 50 – 75% off. Stores are mainly empty. No one’s buying anything, except time.

The shoe is fast becoming the WID ( an aberration from WMD ) of the times – a Weapon of Individual Destruction. One such rubber soled model, grey and appearing somewhat forlorn, was flung at the Chinese Prime Minister in Cambridge yesterday, as he addressed an august gathering ; an obvious inspiration from the one Bush faced, sorry, ducked twice, in Iraq. British television remarked on the incident and covered it widely. The refrain however being directed more to the ‘chucker’ possessing a bad aim, since it missed the target by some distance, than the gravity of the moment.

I am a little amused that the shoe has garnered so much interest in the electronic media and the press in the West. Back home it has been quite a common phenomenon, in the settlement of disputes between aggrieved parties. Particularly among the ladies, who have never hesitated to reposition their ‘chappals’ from feet to hands in the shortest duration of time, when tempers have been frayed.

Equally, it is done away, with alacrity, at times of reverence. The visits to temples and mosques. The lighting of the traditional lamp at inaugurals. Before entering a visitor’s home….

I was deeply touched to see Mallika Sarabhai at the Crystal Award in Davos, remove her shoes, before she made her way to the stage to receive her recognition.

Our culture and tradition lives and exists through thousands of years of our country’s history, reverberating prominently through our epics.

Bharat, the younger brother of Ram, carrying back his ‘padukas’ from the forest where he had been exiled and placing them on the throne as a symbol of Ram, his elder’s hierarchal presence, till his return after 14 years, has been the strongest and most endearing moment in the guiding of our ethics.

Another hour and a half to go and I must start putting away objects ‘under the seat’ or in the ‘baggage holds above’ securely, before landing.

Thank you for being with me from the southern shores of GreenLand to the North American land mass.

Yes GreenLand. And then down from there. Long haul flights follow the curvature of the earth to minimize distance. So from London you start almost in a northerly direction, taking the curve past the tip of GreenLand and coming down over Canada from the north down to NYC.

Love and more..

Amitabh Bachchan

Day 284

London, UK                                February 2, 2009                   12:45 pm

SNOWED IN ! SNOWED OVER !! SNOWED UNDER !!

London has never been seen like this according to the news. And as I look out of my window, it is still at it. The flakes they are a falling… and falling fast.

A wise decision was taken early in the morn of Feb 2 and cancellations and adjustments accordingly made. Just as well. Even though traffic was moving, albeit at a very cautious pace, there was no guarantee for flights. Within the hour, news came through that they had been cancelled and airports shut.  And here is what it looks like from my window -

So.. we wait for Abhishek to wake up and to give him the news that we shall not be coming in today. He shall be disappointed. But let us see how the morrow holds for us. The storm in snow is predicted for NYC as well tonight, which will be a point to consider travel in that direction at all.

There will now be time to ruminate and read the many scripts that I keep carrying from location to location and never address them. There will be time to perhaps make many more responses to the EF. And there shall be time to rest and repair the wounded back, which, I must say has behaved rather well since the last episode.

Chelsea lost again. To Liverpool. The Steelers won a dramatic Super Bowl. And what a fantastic catch in the closing moments for a touch down victory for them. And Nadal.. !! What a stupendous game at the Australian Open. Some of his recoveries from near impossible angles were just breath taking !!

And thank you all for giving me the link to the Crystal Award ceremony in Davos on YouTube. And for all the congratulatory messages sent to me. I am honored and obliged and deeply grateful.

With the help of a friend I have now successfully learnt how to operate my mobile to the internet and there is a sense of great accomplishment within me. Strange how spirits rise when you pick up a new faculty !!

This internet ‘thingy’ is such a fascinating and delightful world. I have been sitting on it for more than 8 hrs now and still feel I need to do more.. ha..

In honor of those that send me gems of existence with some consistency on my mobile here are a few -

‘As long as u say “Not today”..

Sucess is “Never” yours.

The moment u start saying “Y not Today”,

Success is all “Yours”

‘The first step towards change is awareness, the second step is acceptance’

‘The more we know the less we need to show’

My love with you always – will be back again.. perhaps later today..

Davos from the air. Davos from my window. Davos as we drive to it and from it. Davos with Jet Li after the Crystal. And here in London, remnants of Davos beginning to appear. Snow over the night and weather warnings for tomorrow morning. At a time when we shall be venturing out to catch the flight to New York !!

If it is bad, we stay put. But there are weather warnings for New York as well. Snow storm for tomorrow evening after rain. Guess we shall take a call once we see what is in store in the morning…

Day 282

London, UK                       February 1, 2009/ written for January 31, 2009                   6:00 pm

It was the day of the Award in Davos at the World Economic Forum. The snow and the extreme temperatures kept us indoors. The evening time of departure to the venue was indicated much before the event began and so dressed in national we drove across, frozen roads and intense looking security at every corner.

Its a maze this entire setting of the WEF. You need to be a computerised googled veteran to be able to find your way about. But there were efficient aides to collect you and move you about.

In an ante room by the side of the main presentation area we – the 4 recipients were gathered together and briefed by the wife of the founder of the WEF on procedures and protocol for the event. Malika Sarabhai, the famous dancer of the Bharat Natyam and KuchiPudi dance forms and an activist, a renowned and great conductor of music from Venezuela, Jet Li, the famous actor from China and yours truly, sat around listening like little school children what and how we were supposed to behave and conduct ourselves on stage.

It was a modest crowd. But an eminent crowd. Heads of Corporates and Industry, Politicians, Media barons and accomplished entertainers from all over the world and a fairly large presence from India. Which was interesting and good. It ensured that when you entered there was a recognizable strength of applause in the auditorium.

Each one of us was called up on stage by name, a brief history of our accomplishments was read and the Award presented – a crystal, rare in nature, found among the mountains of Switzerland. All of us made short acceptance speeches, followed by photographs ; the Indian presence coming up for congratulations, and then the evening was taken over by Beethoven. A live philharmonic performance.

There was an invitation to the Morocco soiree later, which I believe went on till the wee hours of the morning, but I did not go. Too tired and an early morning flight to catch pressed me to bed.

Davos is a picturesque location. In winter particularly, because of its proximity to Klosters, the famous ski resort. The Economic Forum has enveloped it for the last 30 odd years and it has now become synonymous with world leadership in all walks of life, that come and spend a week in meeting and discussing how to make the world a better place.

It is a massive exercise in management and execution. But in true Swiss precision everything worked to clock work order. It is also I believe, the one town that could easily boast of the maximum amount of brain and thought power within that short period of time, in its precincts at any given time of year.

Everyone referred to the economic gloom and the possibilities of how to repair it. Speaker after speaker showed anxious concern and anxious solution and what came out quite clearly was that India and China were perhaps the two countries that had less to worry about – their economies obviously affected, but due to the strength of their policies a certain leveling had prevented it from the size and amount of damage that other developed countries were going through.

Most of the interviews that were conducted by local and foreign media asked me for my reactions. I felt terribly embarrassed to be put to such questioning, since finance and economics are an anathema to me. I put forward however that being in the movies was perhaps the best profession at the moment to be in because it was recession free ! After having lost your millions and billions, it would not be out of place to seek solace in taking your mind away from the depression, by watching a movie. It only cost a few dollars !!

But I took pride in the fact that an honor such as the Crystal Award was bestowed on me, an Indian from the world of escapist commercial cinema, a cinema which 50-60 years ago was not such a bright profession to be in. Children from good homes were not encouraged to go anywhere near it ; an activity that was considered infra dig. But look how this very escapist cinema had progressed through the years, where today in an International forum of some eminence, I was able to stand and represent my fraternity and my country in a most humbling recognition.

I have always believed cinema in India to be a great integrator. A facility that has brought people together. When we sit in the darkened arena of a cinema theatre, we never ask whether the person sitting next to us is a Hindu or a Muslim or a Christian or Sikh, or that the color of his skin is black or white. We sit together and laugh at the same jokes, sing the same songs, cry at the same emotion. There are very few existing examples left in our torrid and uncertain world, that can boast thus. I am proud that I form a small part of the fraternity that delivers and encourages such an occurrence. And happy that the cynicism with which our cinema was looked upon not so very long ago is fast changing.

It has surprised me that nations and nationalities that are far removed from our culture are aware of our films and actors and our music and our presence. It has surprised me that approximately 3 billion people watch our films. Almost the same amount if not more of those that watch the cinema from Hollywood. Some research gave figures of 3.8 billion to 3.2 billion – Indian to Hollywood !! Thats half the population of the world in each entity. Thats a very long journey from the the 1930′s, 40′s and 50′s.

Today cinema in India has almost become a parallel culture of the country. Whether that is good or bad for a nation is debatable, but its reference every time the country name is taken reflects its importance, not just in our society, but in the society of other countries as well.

Yes we are criticized and ridiculed on our content. On our quality. And in the monotonous cliched and formatted story telling of our scripts. On the ‘miserable’ acting talents of our actors. But when you are accosted by white Americans as you stand in a queue to board a plane at Zurich airport, for autographs and a photo opportunity and when you ask them how they know you and when they reply – “Who doesn’t know you ?”, you begin to recognize the truth behind whatever little presence Indian cinema has made in all these years.

These were some of my impressions as I spoke from the podium at the Awards.

Davos is over now. The flight from Zurich this morning came through with delay and some concern. At the point of take off, it began to snow rather heavily. Snow deposit on the wings of an airplane prevents take off because it forms an obstruction to the wind flow that lifts an aircraft up. But science and invention came wheeling in like giant grasshoppers, spraying orange and green fluids over the mentioned parts and all seemed well again. I remember a delayed take off in similar circumstances from Moscow during one winter. Except it was a lot more exciting. We would de ice and run the airstrip to the end, but get iced again in the bargain. We would turn back  restart the procedure try the run and come back. This went on several times and the crew and passengers made light of it on every try. A mini on the spot betting, on whether particular attempt would result in a take off went into operation. There were a few smart winners on board that day…

More now from London tomorrow as I transit to New York…

My love as ever -

Amitabh Bachchan
